The constantly changing spectacle of nature inspires me. Its rippling pools, swelling clouds and twisting limbs gesture to me but its shifting light enchants me. Seas sparkle. Forests dapple. Flowers glow. These animating effects entice me to move my studio outside and paint plein air. Even for a portrait or a figure painting, I find myself moving the model into the fresh air. When confined to a studio, I look for evidence of nature’s wildness — cool light from a northern window falling on a shoulder, breeze from an open window stroking a curl. The lively feeling nature arouses never feels fully satisfied in the small paintings I make outdoors. I want to paint larger, creating paintings that immerse the viewer in the sparkling, dappling, glowing light that engulfs me when I’m in the great outdoors.
