Early 2006 I took a camera and started making photos not asking myself questions about the technical aspects of photography. I just learned making photos by doing shoots, looking at the screen of my camera, making mistakes, working with other photographers and giving my photos to others to criticize them. I mainly work on location using natural light. Photoshop or other software I only use to convert photos into duotones or correct light and contrast.
I don't plan shoots but mainly improvise. I arrange a model, we choose a location and depending of the weather, mood of the day, how things go, the things I discover in the model and the location, I make photos. Of course I talk with a model about the styles we're going to do (portraits, sensual, artistic, nudes …) but that's all. I seldom have a picture in my head before, just an idea of an atmosphere. And more than once I make totally different photos as what was the idea before. Than I see something that's beautiful to me and say 'Look ....' and we start …
My models I choose by intuition. There must be something in their eyes or something in what they wrote down that intrigues me. I’m not looking for perfect bodies and perfect faces. I’m looking for people with a passion for artistic photography, people someone else might call ‘strange’, people who are discovering themselves, insecure people, people with scars on their soul … I’m looking for ‘real’ people.
I like portraits, sensual photo's, erotic photo's, 'strange' photo's, artistic nudes, story telling and more. In fact I don't care what kind of photo's I make as long as they are tasteful (to my opinion), special, artistic and show something of an emotion and of the person I'm working with. And beneath making photos a shoot is for me also having a nice day with an interesting person.
I’m not interested in any form of paid work. That means I never charge a fee for making photos with someone, I pay my own costs and I don’t sell prints. But I hope I can organize an interesting exhibition in 2010 and bring out my first photo book.
