Looking to buy a new lense- if you have limited bucks
you want a good lense, really want an L series for shooting outdoor, people, and use a Canon 20D what do you recommend...

I have my own ideas, but would like to hear what works for others
pros and cons etc.

Thanks

I've recently subscribed to the "Primes Rule" club.  Generally they're inexpensive, fast, and sharp; atleast by "L" zoom standards.  My two latest are the 135mm/2.8 SF and the 24mm/2.8.  I've had a 50mm/1.8 forever and it's a great bargian.  For the time being, my zooms are relegated to backup duty.  Though the Tokina 80-200mm/2.8 ATX looks tempting for wedding services where the photographer isn't welcome in the scantuary during the ceremony and/or sports photography.

If you're using 1.6x canon cropped cameras, go for the tamron 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di zoom lens.  It's sharp, only a few hundred kelvin warmer, and doesn't have USM, sometimes sharper than 24-70L @ f2.8 (no joke). ~350-400

other than that, you'll miss nothing at all.

If you have money and are using a Full Frame Sensor (ie. 1ds, 1ds mk2, 5d), then pick up a 24-70L or 24-105L. ~1100

If you're outdoors and have plenty of room and want to take close up portraits.

Sigma 70-200 F2.8 ~650

Otherwise
Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS ~1600
Canon 70-200 F2.8L ~1000
Canon 70-200 F4L ~500
