I'm going to order some comp cards and I want to know how many of you think it is worth it for a stylist.  I have a wonderful business card that everyone compliments on but, I feel I need a comp card for other purposes.

What do you think?
What comp card companies do you recommend?

I've decided to get comp cards myself, mainly for the purpose of sending out to production companies and modeling agencies. I think as a stylist you will always top yourself, so getting 1000 cards is insane when it may take you a while to get rid of them. I was thinking of starting out with 100, then switching up the images and then placing a new order. You know that when those first 100 run out, you will have a new favorite image that you may want to flaunt.

So yes, get comp cards and give them out to the serious people you want to connect with, and just give your regular business card to everyone else.

Good luck deciding.

Do what u want to do. Invent something that no one else is doing. Who cares a crap about what everyone else is doing?  Do what YOU do, as an aritst, wants to do. It is your art.

I look at what everyone else is doing, I do something diffent.  Period.

* My little two cents*  lol

I would suggest that you do get comp cards. If you plan to send your portfolio to agencies, you want to include your comp card, so they have something to remember you by. Besides, you never know who you may meet, so it's a good idea to have some available when you go to events where agency heads will be. As Tanisha stated, I also think it's best to only get a few (50-100), because you want to keep them fresh. I never order more than 100-120 of anything, business or comp cards, because I like to change up the pictures. Just my .02!

I was thinking this too. How many pics should be on it? I mean, I want to put more than I would do a modeling one to show different ethnicities (sp) and styles.

Now thats a good question. I'm currently having one designed and it will have a total of 5 images. The front will have my most stunning image to date, with the back showing different ethnicities as well as styling. I guess you dont want to put too much on your card because they may not want to view your book. I suppose the idea is to give them a sample so that they want to see more.

I have comp cards and they are incredibly useful.
They do help the art director remember you,
especially when there are 300 portfolios on thier desk.
Its an instant mini portfolio.
I would have the front pic kinda natural. And then the other 4 on the back you can do whatever as long as it shows your range yet sticks to the market you want to be in.

Mr. Hall... just looking at your amazing website... WE KNOW 'YOU' DON'T do what everyone else is doing.  I can just imagine your comp card... it's probably boarder with metallic hair or something amazingly memorable.

I found some online comp card companies that I can order 50-100 comp cards.  Not sure of the quality.  However, I can get them for a reasonable price.  I think you are so right about not getting too many.  I want to be able to change them up when I get new pictures that out do what I already have.

NEXT QUESTION: Should you put images of your tear sheets on your comp cards.  I don't see why not but, it's a question anyway.

My thoughts exactly!
If you really payed attention to what he just said DON'T listen to the industry standards and do what feels right for YOU ! As an artist you should know better than that. I guarantee you MH heard all the way thrue his career  that his creations were too crazy for this industry but today he is a source of inspiration for many. None of them would existed if he didn't listen to himself .

Promo cards are very common for MUA's and other stylists. Unless you are with a agency you can do what you want.(Sometimes agencies have there own layout to follow.)  Just make sure the shots are drop dead gorgeous. All Killer No Filler......

Here is the front and back of my main MUA's last card. Card is 8.5" by 5.5" Big photo on the back, and the text and three shots on the front. That is just one of millions of ways to do them. Terry likes to keep hers simple but you can go a lot fancier if you want. Be creative but dont over power the images.

P.S Although in this sample Terry put just my work on it, it is often a good idea to put several different photographers work on the card. Also lots of MUA's and such have different cards one for fashion/catalog, one for commercial ect.

Lastly don't order too many at once as you get new work you will want to get new updated cards often. Around 100-150  cards is plenty.

Here are some companies that prints comps, H/S, ect Lots of companies will send you a sample pack that has several different samples of the quality and price differents.

I personally have used and recommend both Americas printer and modern postcard. Both do really nice work. Although neither sells in less than 500 quantity's.

Dan your the Man.

Thanks for the great info.  I just laid out my comp cards and I'm searching for a printer now.  I found a few that sell as little as 50 comp cards but, I know I will need at least 150.  I'll check into all the sites you listed.  Thanks again!

Comp cards are great- people get to see what you have and what they are getting.  How many images is up to you.  Try www.vistaprint.com they have great deals and you can upload you own images or you can purchase a package of premium glossy postcard paper at your friendly office supply store and print them out yourself.  Hence saving lots of money and you can change them whenever and as often as you want- as long as you have a good printer. lol. Good luck.

Best marketing company/printer: Euro Street Graphics. They don't specifically cater to the beauty industry so their prices are incredible. Their phone number is 1.888.euro st 1 or 813.935.9184. They can work with you over the net & ship anywhere. Very creative, artist vision. Ask them for samples.
