You dahling , The Hutu and the Tutsi, many of them shared the same language, religion, intermarriage, etc, etc, etc. It is not like one was Christian and the other Muslim or the other green and the other blue. It was now neighbor against neighbor depending on tribal origin. I was based on something smaller than that...the width of the nose.

Your origin or "tribe" was decided by the width of your nose in Rwanda...and so was the racism BORNE from that inner-race distinction. Am I losing any of you? Like the girl who was called "pass for white" in another thread...

priscilla18 wrote: lol why though black is black Well this question can be answered in many different ways. It depends on who you ask. If your asking me I would tell you that mainstream America has projected an image using all media aspects to project and determine what "Beauty" is when it comes to women of color. In music videos, magazines and just simple pop culture and professional entertainment we have been lead to believe that any woman of color must compete and looks as close to a European standarized as possible. This will never change. Its always assume through media perceptions that "more fair skin and straigher hair texture women are more beautiful than the darker, more tightly curled hair tressed beauty." There's always one or two cliche darker beauty women. This has always been from my great grandmother to now. Here's a book that I read Willie Lynch Letters It was a book I read about slavemasters using mental slavery vs physical slavery. Just to give you synopsis it basically states that if you but Blackman against Blackwomen,Young vs Old, Lightskin vs Darkskin etc that all slaves and their decendants will be enslaved to this thought process for the next 300 years. This was in the 1800s. Its not right and its true that not everyone thinks this way but its been so driven into the masses for so long that some of the youth are brainwashed. I've been a witness to hearing young men say how they want a "redbone" or "Brownin" and I've heard some say the wouldn't date a dark women because they don't want their babies to be to "dark" or they want their babies to have "nice" hair. Self hatered is a deadly disease that can be eventually reverse through self love and proper education. There are women of color across the world that's bleaching there skin to be lighter, using chemicals to straighten their natural hair or having nose surgeries to emulate their white counterparts. Even Cleopatra was altered to look like something she really wasn't. Its hard sometimes for a culture to understand what they are without knowledging and understanding WHO they are. If you need futher reading materail you can pm me Peace and Love

It's just as bad in the Hispanic/Latin community.... My Grandmother is Brazilian. She's barely tan... but she still wasn't light enough in the eyes of my Grandfather and his family. It's disgusting that it happens within my own family...

It's even worst because it comes from your family. My Mother is the darkest one in her family..... All her life, she was told that if she were to cut her hair, she wouldn't have any beauty left because she is too dark to be considered pretty. Her own mother told her this.... on the daily.... how is that not just as bad.

My sister-in-law grew up with this prejudice in Indonesia. Over there, there is light skinned Indonesians and dark skinned. Her family was a mixture of the two. Her father was light and would say, to the light skinned children, "My beautiful children, sit on this side." It deeply affected her. Though my brother is caucasian, when she came to the states she felt she fit in ore with the black community on a much deeper level.

Spike Lee's "School Daze" touches on this issue with the rivalry between the Wannabes and the Jigaboos (he got a lot of grief in some circles for airing dirty laundry). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlxI3-8BVKQ A more serious look can be found in Lawrence Otis Graham's book, "Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class"
