How to get the camilla akrans look
Hey guys, I'm particularly impressed by the work of a photographer called camilla akrans. In particular, she uses a recognisable style of post processing. It's difficult to describe, but it's a rich, almost cross-processed look, with emphasis on the purple tones. Here are some examples: I'm curious to know what a good technique would be for manipulating colours in this manner. I know that Camilla's look involves more than just colours. However, it's the colours which I'm specifically interested in. I've been playing with some of my images, but I just can't get a good result. Best, Dave May 31 09 04:51 am Link Hmm, starting to get it, but still a long way off. May 31 09 05:15 am Link that's how i would do it, from the original picture i would create a color swatch so you get the right colors from the photo, then i would use the gradient tool in camera raw 5.3 using the colors from the color swatch created, perhaps you need to create several objects of camera raw in your psd file using multiple layer masks. what do you think? May 31 09 05:16 am Link Ohh, I do love her work!! I'd suggest perhaps duplicating the layer, adding a coloured gradient to the duped layer, changing opacity/levels/curves/hue/saturation etcetc in order to get a more/less subtle effect, and then masking over the model, to draw attention to her as the focus of the image...to get the lighter effect, selective colour works quite well, also enables you to emphasize/de-emphasize certain colours...like with the purpler hues... May 31 09 06:01 am Link Thanks for the suggestions! I thought this thread might be a nice change on the usual 'dave hill look' ones I had a go - I totally overdid it, but I'm kind of getting there slowly. May 31 09 06:40 am Link yeah, the green probably a bit less saturated than the original color to get this semi-kitsch look, might be that you would need some different kind of a picture, more texture around the girl rather than a grey wall, blue sky with big white clouds..... the whole thing gives you a modernized psychodellic/hippi look. try also the lab modus when in photoshop. May 31 09 07:28 am Link Warmed up a bit Good idea about lab mode May 31 09 08:05 am Link to play around is fun, but at the end it will have to be your own style May 31 09 08:12 am Link ? May 31 09 08:41 am Link To me it looks like gradient maps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC6vojAbVi0 On top of that it looks like there is some type of overlay of clouds on each layer. You can really see it in the first image. May 31 09 09:03 am Link I have been playing with this and it's damn cool. I need to use this on something to get the look I want. Thanks for the heads up. May 31 09 09:37 am Link very easy to do! you just duplicate your finished work then you put a gradient on top of it using different blend modes put a mask on the gradient layer, invert the mask so you can paint the gradient behind your subject and blend accordingly. You can paint in where you want and at different opacities. May 31 09 10:00 am Link Gibson Photo Art wrote: precisely May 31 09 10:01 am Link next try Getting there slowly but steadily... May 31 09 10:48 am Link thanks for pointing out the cloud trick, it's very subtle yet it seems to make the difference.... May 31 09 10:50 am Link I used the clouds generated by photoshop. They are much smaller than the clouds in the original image, and account for the mottliness. Here's a quick mock up of me using cgitexture clouds (this is quite subtle, and obviously I haven't masked out the model...): May 31 09 01:18 pm Link That is much closer than your first try you are definitely getting there. I think everyone has pretty much gave good information on this. I would also not rule out curves on this, not just for the contrast, but actually for the color as well. Wide radius sharpening for the contrast should be considered as well. - Phen Jun 01 09 02:08 am Link What's funny about this all is that I love Akrans' work, as well... and very little of it that I have looks like what you've posted In the work I have, her blacks are somewhat soft/hollow and overall colors are desaturated and painterly: Or she goes the other route and makes things very striking and graphic: Jun 01 09 04:15 pm Link Just a suggestion to add. What about going into selective color, blacks, and slightly lighten then and pull more magenta or green in addition to what you are doing? Jun 01 09 04:29 pm Link I saw these shots in a magazine a while ago, but noticed in every shot ( almost )she has a shadow over her eyes, but no where else ( like someone is shading her eyes for her. ) to me that part looked odd. The rest of the processing is very intriquing. Jun 02 09 06:16 am Link |
