I am making one for my Norman dish out of some grid material that I picked up at a yard sale for free. I am using the older gridding that used to come on overhead fluorescent lights. You can also see if you can pick something up on ebay that is made for other strobes and modify it to fit.

Speedotron 22" Mola-Style Reflector w/ Speedotron grid. Lightsox diffuser that has a hole cut in the middle. Modded/ replaced the center diffuser w/ Mole/Richardson parabolic.

I think I may have one of the world's LARGEST collections of Beauty Dishes... Balcar Opal-lites, Speedo Molas, Broncolor Robins-egg Blue...

Hell, I want to get a 24" Photogenic!

Go to Home Depot, Menard's or Lowes and get a 2'x4' ceiling grid. Cut it with diagonal cutters. Paint it flat black with Krylon's spray paint for plastic. It'll be square, but that won't matter. To attach it, use velcro. Wrap velcro "cord straps" (electrical dept), around the grid so you have 4 dangling velcro ends, then use 4 velcro self adhesive strips on the dish to fasten the cord wraps to.  It works great!

Just checked your port! It's awesome as well.

The reason for the "lines" and color shifts is that it is for a makeup artist portfolio.

A photographer I know once told me, "You better make sure a model has PERFECT skin if you ever use a beauty dish"

Since not many people I know have "perfect" anything - is this really the case? Idk much about these lovely dishes but these examples are looking great and I'm considering trying my hand at one...

What are the benefits/disadvantages to these little dishes?

Good skin would go for any modifier with a strobe. It really pops out the "imperfections". I find the Beauty dish way better than an Umbrella/Reflector at the skin.

I think what the photog was getting at is:

Beauty dishes were mostly used for....beauty shots. Meaning they were used up close and pretty personal. They were used so close that they bring out any and every flaw on the face of a model, much like a silver reflector.

I find that the use of a beauty dish isn't the same as it was before, I now use a beauty dish to light a full body photo, multiple people.

IMHO, the biggest draw back to a beauty dish is the standard 22inch bd isn't very big, so the fall off is sharp and instant. David Hickey turned me on to beauty dishes seven or eight years ago and back then, he told me he used several mola 48inch beauty dishes. I don't know if that's the case now, but I'll find out in June wink

I have two 24inch beauty dishes from Photogenic, one white and one silver. I hardly ever use the white one, in fact, the white one still looks brand new.

I used the beauty dish for the butterfly lighting effect. Dish 2 feet from model, centered and angled down somewhat i think. Gives the shadow under the nose and chin areas if done right. Always a learning process.

Not sure if this counts, but this was one beauty dish, with sun behind her.
It's the first time I've used it.

I find beauty dishes to be one of the most versatile modifiers in my collection... I've done actual beauty with them (even though this shot is more than just the beauty dish, the main light is a 22 inch gridded silver:

https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3337/3647675576_db80a23166_b.jpg

As well as body work (22inch white socked):

I've even done socked AND gridded:
