GreatMomentsPhotography wrote: Question to Tampa area photographers: Do you have a hard time setting up a shoot with Tampa area models? The reason I ask is in the years I have been doing this- not one model I been able to work with out of Tampa. It just happen again. well thats no bueno i've got a large team of ladies i work with on a regular basis, but they're all commercial gals as i'm too lazy to waste a bunch of time with crazy hobby models... i dont have that kind of patience or stamina in my old age lol. i pay well, i make sure theres fun on set, and i'm a tad cute.... so i havent had any problems getting any gal i want, whenever i want

I shoot TF three or four times a week (although I will typically throw out a few bucks for gas, etc)...I don't use experienced models...have lots of fun, yet remain respectful...and I'm nowhere near "cute" lol....in the last couple years, have only had two or three no-shows, and usually connect with them the next time. I love the Tampa area. Being involved with local photography Meetup groups has made a huge difference...highly recommended.

Chris Photography wrote: https://jim-colton-9970.squarespace.com … vs-amateur Interesting read. Thanks, it was a good read. It does draw a bit of attention to the problem. About 5-6 years ago I made good money, part-time, as a photographer but not much since. Everyone that has a digital camera thinks they are a professional and are willing to give away their services for free or close to it. I found that difficult to overcome and just never pursued much more work. The problem was not that everyone thought they were professional because they had a digital camera! The problem was and is that the buyers either can't tell the difference or don't care about the difference when they can spend far less, or sometimes nothing at all, out of their budget for photography. Sure part of it may have been the economy tanking at the time but when that was combined with everyone and their great grandma getting a digital camera I think that is what did it in for me...and my lack of desire in working harder to make less.

Kathy Porupski, RC Concepcion and Sean Neumayer (among others) do an excellent job of tailoring events to be beneficial to newbs, intermediates and seasoned pros. Obviously this group focuses on off-camera lighting, but that encompasses most photo subjects these days anyway. $5 a year makes you a supporting member. Other active groups are Florida Center for Creative Photography, Lakeland Shooters and the Clearwater Modeling and Photography group. I like the Tampa Strobist gang though, because plenty of models always show up, and the leadership and instruction is top-notch.

The Clearwater group used to be good but now Debra has changed the scheme of things. Still I found groups like Lakeland Shooters and Tampa Strobist group very active. I can't say I go to all. For one, this upcoming one for the strobist group is taking pictures of horses. Its not up my alley. The Lakeland should be good and planning to go some time soon- 1930's Prohibition theme- my bottle is staying in the car tho.

The Tampa Strobist Group and Lakeland Shooters are the ones I show up to the most often. I have been doing this for a year now but its been rewarding. Some of my best shots have come from them. As long as the theme is of interest to me I just keep going.

Should be totally deserted out there Sunrise at Ft De Soto yesterday was great believe it or not. When we were leaving about 9:30, there were a ton of people south of us on the beach in the lifeguard area but no one where we were. The traffic getting into the place was nuts...when we were leaving. I have editing to do from THREE shoots at this point. About 20 stragglers from a couple weeks ago, a quick thing I did on Friday with the kids and then yesterday's stuff. Ugh!
