I blame the internet.

It's a lot easier to be rude when there's no chance you'll ever meet somebody and will never have to look them directly in the eye.

Nah. You can't blame 'the Internet'. The Internet is a 'thing' and inanimate 'object' (until it becomes sentient and take over the whole world!) so it doesn't 'do' anything - it just facilitates.

Are you sure that insulting the members here is a good way to introduce yourself? neutral

If you feel it's a "downfall" to be around us here, why are you now asking us to solve your problems for you?

There are rude, stupid, arrogant, disrespectful people EVERYWHERE. I bet there are plenty on omp, plenty on Facebook, plenty in your home town.

If somebody is rude to you, block them, ignore them, don't give them the time of day and don't give them the satisfaction of letting them see they've riled you.

MM is no different than any other social media website. You can take the good with the bad or you can exercise your prerogative not to bother with it any more. Nobody's forcing you either way.

Personally, I hope you stay and get something positive out of this site - there are a lot of good people here and a lot of good advice to be had if you're willing to listen to it.

However, what you will find is that in the forums people don't tolerate fools gladly and making a fool of yourself will usually be met with some pretty sharp responses. The best advice when it comes to the forums is to watch and read for a few weeks before posting anything, and then to just post a few non-contentious replies in existing threads to get a feel for it before posting a new thread of your own.

Don't go into the Photographers' forum complaining that Photographers are "rude" and "only want to see you nekkid"; don't go into the HMU forum complaining that all MUAs are cheap because they want to charge you a kit fee; don't go into the Models' forum complaining that girls of a different size/colour/build than you get all the best jobs; don't post a thread about Escorts and don't ask how much you should be paid if you only have 4 cellphone images in your portfolio.

Aside from that, have fun! smile

Well it is a harsh business.  I suspect PMs are the issue, perhaps related to her profile demands - but we can't be sure and she has no doubt left this thread behind.

Whether someone rude or not is only a matter of your perception :-) If you feel that someone is disrespecting you, you should tell them how you feel and give them a chance to communicate themselves the way that works for you. Remember that they might be wondering why you are so rude yourself!

I've heard that strident profile demands can draw harsh responses. But that's a bit off topic, I have no idea why people are rude.

Amen! I was raised to respect people, as well. I don't understand why people have to be rude here to get their point across. Yes, sometimes we ask for critique, but there are ways to tell someone that they aren't your cup of tea or need to do something different without being nasty about it.

Without any concrete examples, it's impossible to say what is rude and what is not.  Everyone has different tolerance levels and measuring sticks.

For all we know, the OP may be calling everyone who eats meat "rude", because she is a vegan/vegetarian.  smile

I come from the Northeast. I was raised to respect people who earned and deserved respect. My mother also raised me to be honest in my feelings. If someone is being a douche, I don't put on a saccharin smile, repress the anger, and then go home and throw my Calphalon pans all over the kitchen.

I tell them they're being a douche.

Sometimes that honesty is taken as rudeness. But I find it to be a very honorable and effective trait that I also admire in others.

Edit: I will say that I personally find it rude when people from The South claim that manners or being polite is somehow inherent to a "Southern upbringing" as if they are somehow more polite than other areas of the country.

I've met a lot of people from the south who couldn't spell the word "polite", let alone define it.

I'd like to point out, that if people read her statistics... she's 120lbs at 5'10''(The OP). Her putting her foot down on weight, and not allowing companies or photographers to tell her to lose it... is quite understandable. One would think that photographers want pictures of women, not stick figures. I think she's actually quite beautiful, and has every right to say what does and doesn't happen to her body. It's her body, and her rights. Sure, it means she doesn't get as much work, but she won't lose her own personal self image... for a photoshoot. I commend her on this, I enjoy when people stick to their guns, and refuse to allow others to change them.

Generally it's a lack of penis size or sexual frustration if you believe Freud...lol

But seriously it everywhere online. People feel like being the tough guy/girl well hidden away behind a computers screen.

Always remember this... 98% of the time. Mean people are miserable in their own lives and feel powerless in their lives so the tear others down to feel better about themselves. I have yet to see a happy successful person that goes around attacking others.

There are always exceptions to the rule, but generally that's what it is.

And just because it's true does not make it not rude or inconsiderate.

There is an AVATAR on MM right now that I can't stand to look at so much because I think it's the ugliest picture I have ever seen on here and the guy is trading comments on it.

But it's not my place to tell him how ugly I think the picture is. Because I would not want someone to come out and critique me unsolicited.

Not to mention truth is subjective what's true for one might not be true in the eyes of another.

You only need one rule in life and it's been taught in every Region on the planet in one form or another.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" - Christ

"Do not do to others what you would not want done to you." - Confucius 2000 years before Christ.

AKA Basic Consideration for Others.

That would solve most of the worlds problems if we all followed it.

This.

I've always lived by this. As a Cosplayer, and a model, or a normal person, this is what I live by. I look at the people insulting me, and try to figure out why they are doing it. (Or being rude)

If I realize their attempts at being rude/insulting are a result of self-esteem or confidence issues or bad life, I tend to tell them that they shouldn't take their issues out on other people. Get to the source of the problem, don't treat the affliction with false hopes via insulting or being rude to others.

But that's just me.

Nice to see that someone else understands this motto!

At the same point though, her knowing what she will and won't do off the bat is useful. She's comfortable with who she is. It's a simple thing:
Photographers/Companies who don't like it? Don't have to work with her.
She doesn't have to work with people that tell her she has to change who she is.

I've had photographers tell me that I needed to get under 100, and I told them that I wasn't going to change my image for a job.

Yes, it causes less work, but at the same point... it means that she is comfortable with who she is, and doesn't feel she should change it for anyone.

My problem with a 'commandment' like this one is that putting it on MM is useless. I mean, how many models here would seriously consider an offer from a photographer that says, 'I want to shoot with you 30 days from today; but only if you lose 'x' number of pounds...'

I'm all for people sticking by their beliefs but it just puts me off to see it on an Internet site where it serves no purpose. And honestly, how many reputable companies shop directly for models on a site like MM? I believe they are going to agencies.

This 'commandment' falls in line with warnings in a model's portfolio such as, 'this isn't a dating site... blah, blah...' The dopes this is aimed at don't care and it isn't necessary to tell any actual photographers; so it just comes off as drama.

So does a DEMAND for bringing an escort.

IMHO

So do I.  I photographers treating models with disrespect on occasion; assuming the model is open to styles, or not photography activities they aren't, or expecting to be paid with no particular accomplishments to justify it., and I see models treating photographers that way; assuming they should be paid with no particular accomplishments to supporting, implying that being a photographer means you are some how dangerous, etc.

All you can do is treat the people you interact with respectfully, and ignore those who don't return the favor.

1)  I find that treating models politely & with respect can be a competitive advantage for me.

2)  There's a phenomenon that I call "Internet Bravado" which makes people believe that they are "safe" and even "anonymous" when sitting at home typing on their computer.  In particular, they feel they can say things that they wouldn't say to peoples' faces.

3)  We admire rude comedians too much.  Many believe that being rude approximates wit. It rarely is.

4)  Being constructive is so haaaaard!
