MM, the importance of building a network here ....
So I was just reminiscing on FB about our time on MM and our group who use to discuss together here, many of the people I met here are cherished friends and colleges , so I've been sitting , waiting and watching to see when the Next wave of Artists on here form as we did , and just wanted to share a little of my experience on MM So I having already been a long time vet in the beauty industry , came to MM because I was feeling burned out and uninspired, hoping this would be "The Place " where Id find that thing that was missing ..........what I came to find out ,,,,,,, it was YOU I was missing , watching your new works , and sharing new ideas and techniques, and building a fresh new network of pros Some from our group have moved onto work on issues of Vogue and the likes , some have Became Movie Dept heads , some developed their own cosmetic lines , and others are yet youtube gurus , and speakers in the various trade shows you go to We all came together here , on MM , its been an amazing ride and im grateful for all the friends iv'e made here So while your here , get active , reach out to each other and treat each other with respect weather new or old because these may certainly be the people you work with and for or hire in the future I wish you all the same experience I had here , a bunch of talent comming together and now producing the works you see in magazines and in film and TV , runways and red carpets The dream isn't as far off as you may think , in 1,000 years I never would have realized that the people I was here with would be the people I share in their glories and triumphs in this crazy industry and that we would be the people we wished we were working like and doing the same jobs as The Beatles said it Best Come Together !!!!!!!!!! much love and success to you all Jun 16 14 04:51 pm Link That's a lovely sentiment. I've found myself having a similar experience as you here. Yay Jun 16 14 05:41 pm Link TheMakeupMan wrote: Thank you for posting this! Jun 16 14 07:33 pm Link TheMakeupMan wrote: Very nice post... these are the reasons I wanted to join MM, to connect and meet people, inspire and be inspired... Jun 16 14 08:05 pm Link I personally find that MM is a better place o discuss than FB, it's somehow calmer and therefor you can go more into depth with topics....FB is more for short bursts.... but for me it does stay a important network facility I especially enjoy your contributions . Actually of the whole MM I find this section the most to the point, amicable and helpful Herman www.hermanvangestel.com ______________________________ Art-director • Photographer • stylist • make-up-artist Jun 16 14 11:19 pm Link Great post Anthony. I know that our friendship which formed here...how many years ago?... is one of the best things to come out of MM for me. But you are right...many of the people who 5-8 years ago were helping out newbs on MM are now incredibly well known in the makeup business, or have been featured on shows like"Face Off", or are heading up makeup departments on big time movies. I even remember a certain someone who had multiple commercials he had worked on playing during the Superbowl one year! But remember folks, this forum is only helpful if you make it helpful. Ask some interesting questions... meet your fellow artists... make it count. Jun 17 14 07:49 am Link I feel the same. I love reading forums and shared experiences on MM. I also met amazing people here. Facebook is more about gossiping. Jun 17 14 01:34 pm Link I appreciate being apart of Model Mayhem and still finding my way around networking and love your positive insight! Jun 17 14 03:31 pm Link Aw I feel the same way! That's why I came back on MM I had so many great memories! It has helped shaped me as an artist and to see you still on here inspiring new talents is refreshing and so kind of you. Take notes kids! Being humble is key! Jun 17 14 10:26 pm Link Love you boo! Jun 18 14 12:18 am Link That was beautiful Anthony. I've met so many wonderful people and great artists here. MM has it's share of drama but so does FB...I've actually seen more drama there recently then here. I think with the addition of more artists as Forum Guides and moderators it has improved here. The issues we used to have with non artists starting drama here has pretty much ended as far as I can tell. It was a a little too late for some of the greats we lost forever I think if we can keep trolls and trouble makers out of this forum it will grow again. I always love reading what you have to say Jun 18 14 02:46 pm Link TheMakeupMan wrote: Will you please unblock me from your facebook page....? Jun 20 14 12:14 pm Link this was very inspiring, I loved reading it! Jun 20 14 04:45 pm Link Networking with other creatives is the point of MM and it can be very good for that. It fails when people expect to find clients here, sort of odd as they are specifically not allowed on the site and I don't know why people would expect that. Glad some others are getting something out of it as well. Jun 20 14 04:52 pm Link TheMakeupMan wrote: You've inspired me, to keep moving forward and to not give up on my dream. Thank you. The Love you Get is equal to the Love you Give. I've had amazing success with this site. My advice: Work it! ;-) -JULIAN Jun 21 14 10:42 pm Link OMG Anthony, you've made me realize how many of us met here. Wow. Your post is on point. Where is the next generation of the HMS community on MM? The activity in this forum is fractional compared to when we were all active - sharing information, debating, laughing, fighting. Who's willing to pick up the torch and lead the next generation of vanity department professionals? Jun 23 14 05:22 am Link KJB wrote: Right ! I know. It's amazing KJB right lol. Xoxoxoxox Jun 23 14 06:03 pm Link I still check in here once in awhile, it's where so many of us first 'met', and have since met in person! Wonderful sentiment you expressed Anthony, it will be fun to see the new group of artists on MM grow and learn. Jun 26 14 12:51 am Link TheMakeupMan wrote: I don't think we should just let our torches fade out because of a few idiots. I think we need to take our turf back. I wonder if Forum Guides get extra nice jail cells? Jun 28 14 01:14 am Link LOVE this thread....I haven't been on MM in a longggg while as I've been grinding at my craft/endeavors... I do truly miss all of the veterans and *waving* to the newbies, MM is an amazing creative community one can learn so much from if used in the proper & loving manner... This thread made me smile thank you Anthony and may we all continue to help one another as we walk our passionate journeys as artists #TeamLOVE xo www.NedjettiHarvey.com Jun 29 14 03:35 pm Link BodyPainter Rich wrote: Heyyyy Rich *waving* I concur with all you said!!! I am new to MM and looking forward to learning and sharing with fellow artists. There's so much knowledge on these forums! Jun 30 14 09:13 am Link Thank you for taking the time to write these inspiring words, I haven't used MM in this way but now I know what I've been missing! Jul 09 14 03:36 pm Link I love MM HMS forum! I could spend (and have spent) days reading through the forum posts, there is so much information and so many super helpful, talented amazing artists sharing information and knowledge. For new artists, it should be required reading, to spend some time searching through the forum, after KJB's IMK of course Jul 11 14 06:54 am Link This forum was so instrumental in my development as an artist. I'd love to see it up and hopping again Jul 17 14 07:16 am Link I am brand new to MM and I am here looking through the tabs at the top of the webpage and this is the first forum I read. Thank you for taking the time to write this. As many people have already stated as a reply to you, your positive words have spoken to me. I am so excited and hopeful coming into this site, the idea is genius. People of our industry can be forgotten and ignored on social media like Facebook. They are in a way, too personal to have truly professional aspects. I am glad to see that there is something in the real world that can come out of being a part of this particular online community. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for letting me see that! Jul 18 14 05:32 pm Link I remember my very humble beginnings on MM 8 years ago. I was fresh out of makeup school in MD and I thought I was doing something and I received some real critiques and learned I wasn't doing nothing, lol. It's because of Mary, Anthony, KJB ( I especially harassed him with lots of questions and he answered every single one) and many others that I learned what being in this industry was really about. I was super impressed with the concept of being able to talk to and be apart of a community that embodies the best and brightest of our industry. I haven't been as active on here for some time but I always peep back into the forums to see what's going on. I see you guys and I'm proud! You're truly an inspiration. I've had like 17 careers and I never thought I'd move to LA to pursue makeup seriously. It's because of you that I have been able to do as much as I have. Xoxo TP www.tamikapatrice.com Aug 28 14 12:45 am Link unfortunately FB has changed the industry in many ways but I personally still enjoy using MM because everyone here is here for a specific goal. unlike facebook where we are constantly bombarded with all kinds of information and things not related to arts, here at MM we can all focus what we are looking for and share similar thoughts. fortunately most people I met through MM are really good people and still continue good working relationship. (there's unfortunately no avoiding bad apples). I hope people will start returning using MM more often. Aug 28 14 06:43 am Link I completely started from phone pictures on MM a few years ago. I met all the photographers on MM. I developed relationships with them and grew together. I always tell everyone that you will find what you are looking for on here...don't get lost in all the none sense. MM is a great platform to find talent and build your career. I still work solidly with about 5 photographers I met on here when I started. Sep 08 14 08:00 pm Link Great post! I love learning from all of you so thank you all for sharing of yourselves to help the new kids on the block. Sep 12 14 06:43 pm Link Just signed up for MM and already loving it. In the few days I've been active, I've already met some wonderful people and am scheduling shoots to build my portfolio. Just a part-time model now but aspiring to be a full time model. Hoping MM will help get me there, but for now, I'm enjoying building my experience and portfolio and meeting some really great and artistic individuals. I wish you all the best.
