Herpes is considered 'endemic' in the US, meaning it's a totally normal finding in the general population; like the common cold. What is really scary, is that HPV is transmitted the same way, can be active every day for a life time, and the infected individual may not know it. The physical symptoms of HPV can be zilch, no pain, no discomfort. Given the facts, HPV has to be way more prevalent than Herpes. (The official infection rates have to be false lows.) And HPV, the wrong variant, is so closely associated with cervical cancer that it is now considered to 'cause' the cancer.
In other words, the cause of cervical cancer has to be 'normal' in the US population.  I fully expect cervical cancer to skyrocket in the near future, especially after a decade of a poor economy and people not getting check-ups or preventative care.  Treatment of cervical cancer has a very high success rate, and even has a 'cure' rate, if caught early.  If not caught early, treatment is simply delaying death.

Whenever I buy new shoes I get blisters on my heels, so I make an appointment with Planned Parenthood.

Where are these statistics derived from? Private medical records? Public survey?

just one more means of sex shaming in this country :sigh:

it doesnt matter if we all have it or all are doing it,  if theres a fictitious moral high ground to be forged,  there will always be people clawing to the top and pointing fingers down below

Seems like one person here is perpetuating the stigma while the other doesn't really care about it and just wants to post an interesting fact.

Never been tested but I reckon I've caught at least two herpes virus and one of them is very likely to be HSV1.

As I have mentioned before most people are asymptomatic, which is not the same as not being infected.

And chicken pox is herpes.

(Oh shit guys, it's almost two in the morning, don't get me started researching infectious diseases again, too interesting for the early hours of the morning)

You didn't just post a fun fact, you asked people to disclose personal sexual information to the public under the guise that mm is a safe and judge-free environment to do so.

One of us is just being realistic.

HSV-1 is the principal cause of cold sores.

That's HSV-1, not HSV-2, the principal cause of genital herpes.

80% of people with Herpes don't know about it.

That's because HSV-1 is an innocuous infection in the great majority of people.

haha! Who here has it?

I'm sure you do.

These statistics have been known for decades, so I don't see the point of bringing it up.

Oh wait did we stop being sarcastic? I didn't get the memo.
If 'herpes' is indeed something as small as a chicken pox, then why is it such a personal matter?

Just a random question about blood giving. I regularly give blood here in NZ, i'm up to 18. We can only give blood after 3 months.

Is it true you get paid to give blood there? Here it's completely voluntary.

Question 10 http://www.blood.ca/CentreApps/Internet … enDocument

Herpes is not blood-borne

http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-b … ed_Disease

And they have no reason to tell you, its not life-threatening, and they dont have time to call up the thousands of donators they get every day to inform them of their various illnesses. If it were HIV, maybe, since you're legally required to report when you test positive. And then you'd probably get the call from the CDC or someone, not the bloodbank.  But not herpes

You can get paid, depending on where you donate. I usually give at blood drives at work. I get paid in orange juice and a small pack of dry chocolate chip cookies. Occasionally I get something cool like a red-cross or MASH style insulated bag, but my sister claims those.

Herpes and chicken pox belong to the same family of viruses, but that does not make them the same http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpesviridae

And its a personal matter because HSV is largely seen as a sexually transmitted disease, whereas chicken pox, shingles, etc are not. Peoples sexual health is generally seen as personal, especially when theres a possibility of facing ridicule.

Our high school did blood drives and I tried to do them every time just to get out of class, but I didn't weigh enough at the time. Someone brought doughnuts once sad

10. Stress ball
15. Cup (That's my last gift sadly )sad
25. Shirt
50. A car. I don't know I can't remember. I just know what was coming up next and how far away it was. sad

So, a large percentage of the population that have had cold sores are just lumped in those statistics?

Yup, cold sores and/or chicken pox. I really don't know the stats but I would be willing to bet that a significant percentage of people with herpes did not receive it sexually.

Apparently so.  According to CDC, the rate of genital herpes in Americans 14-49 is about 1 in 6.

And, BTW, chicken pox is a different virus than genital herpes.
