Thank you!

'High End Retouching'?... hmmmmm... not extremely experienced in the retouch world here... could it be 'to elevate a model's backside and edit it to perfection'?... hmm

To retouch preserving skin pores -at a "pixel-level". Very detailed/specific color manipulation. Attention to every detail.

Non-destructive, pixel-preserving retouching using FS and D&B. What one sees in major ad campaigns, particularly in close-up makeup or beauty shots.

I think it's a fairly meaningless term, which is perhaps why so many retouchers adopt it. It gives the impression of quality without actually defining what that quality is.

^^ This guy is probably right.

I think some of the general public may understand what high-end retouching is; and to others it means "IDK what it is but it sounds expensive"; and others have no idea at all. On the other hand, there are probably even fewer people who understand what FS or D&B are. So one could explain it out but they still won't get it.

I was sitting here trying to figure out what fs was then a duh moment hit. Lol. I was starting to feel like I was going to be one of your people who don't understand. I was worried for a second.

Sorry, I should have spelled it out!

FS = frequency separation
DB = dodge and burn

Ha ha yeah I know what it was I just for the life of me (well like 30 seconds) couldn't figure it out. I knew I knew what it was just couldn't remember the words. I have it set as an action with a keyboard short cut so my mind totally blanked.

If

a) it makes Fine Art (hushed tone mandatory) out of normal art
b) I can't guess most of what they did when I look at the before and after
c) the retoucher's rates are higher than those of the photographer who made the photograph
or
d) Bob Randall thinks it's good

then it's high end.

This is so funny to me, especially b and c

Retouchers who are paid a lot of money to do it are high end.

I would say this woman is high-end, especially with her ability to change hairstyles.  The site's mouse-over images pretty much separate her from most retoucher's abilities.

Almost bordering illustrative and drawing too.

I can tell you what it's not.  Just changing the Contrast, Saturation, Brightness, Hue, Color, and running the photo through Portrait Professional, is not high-end retouching.

Well, after a recent casting, I am beginning to think there is some confusion on the term "high-end retouching". LOL.

Nearly every reply contained this term, but only a small percentage actually seemed capable  of actually delivering it.

The way I tell my staff how to apply the term is based on where the retoucher has been published.  If they are regularly in Vogue Italy or Paris, they are High End (after a recent trip back to the USA, I'd exclude Vogue USA. LOL).

If they are employed by one of the top 15 or so photographers in the world, they are high-end.

If they retouch ads for YSL or similar, they are high-end.

In summary, a retoucher could be defined by the end-use of their product.

"High End" is a term used by advertisers to sell a product. It used to pertain to stereos now everyone uses it. LOL

The only retoucher I know that can use that term is Natalia.

High End implies Professional. Professional implies "knows what the fuck they are doing and get paid for it from Hi Profile clients"

High end? I don't know? However, I would say super exceptional work and talent.
