Why can't photoshop remember the tool that a particular layer uses - or maybe I just don't know how.

I'm constantly switching between say a clone (or heal) layer and d&b layers and ...
Everytime I switch layers I have to go back to the tools and make sure I switch the tool. Sometimes I forget and I'm healing on my d&b layer. It would be so much easier if one could associate a tool to a layer and when you clicked on the layer to work on it, PS would just use the appropriate (or at least the default) tool for that layer.

That's a great idea!   Maybe you should patent it.
