genres be damned. post examples of what you consider to be great songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X2TXwREYOY

this one was a major hit, in the way back machine, and has been covered a million times; but this is the actual writer performing it. jw wrote some iconic songs, but i still consider this his opus magnum.

next up?

In terms of complete song construction (thoughtful lyrics, a melody that's both catchy and yearning, a fantastic arrangement, and superb performances), it rarely gets any better than this

I'm not even going to bother because 95% of you will give me that look a dog gives you when you make fart noises with your armpit....because my faves are by bands so far underground they are almost in the mantle...

For sheer mastery of the female voice - Mary Fahl gets my vote

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QknQ9f7Sz6c

But then again - if genre's be damned - how about something Medieval Moorish? - I'm a dead sucker for that Contralto voice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0jC19eFx5c

Or - for me - it's when something is firing on ALL cylinders - Metallica took a hell of a risk - and transcended all expectations and stereotypes.  (Which still seems to make some folks more than a little squeamish)

uh uh. first person to denigrate another's pick, will be bounced from the thread (symbolically, since i draw no real water here).

i specifically said "genres be damned". i don't care if it's metal, polka, nepalese chants, or high school cheers.

post away...if nothing else, it's an avenue to expand horizons.

see, like this. i've never heard of mary fahl, but like vv, i love me a good contralto voice. that's why i love singers like nina simone, or lisa gerrard. oh, and cassandra wilson, too.

Extreme - More Than Words

I almost didn't buy that CD because the group's name is Extreme, the name of the CD is Pornograffiti and these were/are some "strange" looking people.  This song doesn't match them or their voices (my opinion).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS7CZIJVxFY - "Lateralus" by Tool (try to follow the math in this song.. )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02tL7YymAmc - NIN "Somewhat Damaged" I saw this very performance. There's so many good fucking songs of his but I love this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_w5SyiyqUtY - "Blue Veins" by The Raconteurs (Jack White) While I dislike Jack as a person, he's easily THE most talented person to emerge in the past 30 years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1_6yCHnSI4 - "Sloe Gin" by Joe Bonamassa This guy is just amazing on guitar - 5 minutes in is where you see his raw talent. I'm such a huge blues rock fan and when I discovered him my life got a lot brighter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J4trNtRwoc - "Nothing in Return" by Down. Probably the most underrated metal band ever.

Was going to post some heavy metal songs but like Chris, people are gonna be like; "Wat?" tongue

It's difficult to pick songs without understanding the context of its usage.

I've long felt that there is an unnamed art form that places the perfect song into a dramatic situation (in TV shows & movies).  When the perfect song matches the dramatic situation.  It is an art.

But here -- you are just going to get a list of favorite songs.  Here's some of my current favs:

Ain't No Sunshine (When She's Gone) -- Bill Withers
The Drowsy Bee -- Brooks Williams (hard to find)
Dirt In The Ground -- Tom Waits
Ode to Joy -- Beethoven
Jump Around -- House of Pain

Is that what you were looking for?

Lots of great posts here.
There are just so many that can be considered great songs.  I'm not going to go into long lists.

This is not a song but a symphony and I have always loved it...
I'd like to cast my vote for Beethoven's - 6th Symphony, 'Pastoral'

Agreed ...

I have to say, though, there was a day I was hanging out in a motorcycle shop where they were playing a video of people doing extreme things: jumping off things that looked like really high cliffs on their ATV's, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, etc and all sorts of other things. The music in the background was Beck's I'm A Loser and it was absolutely perfect!

When the song was over, I found out that the music was on the radio and they had the TV sound turned down. It wasn't part of the video!  How hard is that to do?  I was still impressed.

Eric Clapton - Layla https://youtu.be/fX5USg8_1gA

while maybe not the greatest---a long time favorite:
Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton - Can't Find My Way Home https://youtu.be/VT-SFgkVlno

arguably one of the all time great female voices in rock:
Linda Ronstadt - Tumbling Dice https://youtu.be/4s4_teISos0

I have been listening to Carlos Santana's mastery of the guitar for more than 45 years---
Santana - Into The Night ( Live at Montreux 2011) https://youtu.be/oxNz_15qjEI

cant forget Jimi Hendrix-
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child ( Slight Return ) https://youtu.be/6OTvz1lJzmI

and maybe his match on a guitar:
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN -- VOODOO CHILE https://youtu.be/OEJh2FFUUoU

cool  thread--- I am an old fart---its been cool "growing old" with Clapton and the rest of them, thru their life issues, and now old age---for those  who survived.

I love a good wordsmith.

"Living on the road, my friend
was gonna keep you free and clean.
Now your wear your skin like iron
And your breath's as harsh as kerosene."
                               - Townes van Zandt, "Pancho and Lefty"

"They say there was a magic chord,
Which Daniel played, that pleased the Lord.
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this, the 4th, the 5th,
The minor fall, the major lift,
A baffled king composing Halleluja."
                                - Leonard Cohen - "Hallelujah"

"I was blue when I met you.  You took my breath.
Now you say you really love me and it scares me to death.
Cause now I lie awake, and wonder, and worry about losing you.
I don't care what you say, maybe I was happier blue."
                                 - Chris Smithers - "Happier Blue"

".... In the end I was the mean girl, somebody's in between girl."
                                  - Neko Case - "Hold On, Hold On"

"Imagine there's no heaven.  It's easy if you try."
                                  - John Lennon - "Imagine"

"When you attend a funeral, it is sad to think that sooner'r'
later those you love will do the same for you.
And you may have thought it tragic, not to mention other adjec-
tives to think of all the weeping they will do.   (but don't you worry)
No more ashes, no more sack cloth
And an arm band made of black cloth
Will soon no more adorn a sleeve.
'Cause if the bomb that drops on you,
Gets your friends and neighbors too,
There'll be nobody left behind to grieve. (And we will)

All go together when we go.
What a comforting fact that is to know.
Universal bereavement, what an inspiring achievement.
Yes, We'll All Go Together When We Go."
                                  - Tom Lehrer - "We Will All Go Together When We Go"

You are quite welcome - she is a gem.  There is a moment in the 2nd link of mine where she hit's that Bb in Ben Andi Habibi - (and during a live show, I heard somebody behind me going "Wow!")

One quick story - Mary did the opening song for the movie "Gods and Generals"  (Perhaps the last movie in US history to have an intermission)  Now, I went with a bunch of hard bitten Civil War Re Enactors - and the power of her voice - combined with the flags of the units that are so familiar to us during the opening credits - well,,  you have never seen that many middle aged men blubbering into their beards.  I had never heard of her before- but, I resolved to find out.  That's heady stuff - knowing that you are going to be a fan - after one song.

This is one  - that I simply cannot watch - it is still just more than I can bear - But perhaps the best use of her voice - in honoring the firefighters on 9-11

Well and not to nitpick a great song (or another nitpicker for that matter!!!) but isn't it a "secret chord"?

big_smile

Will list a couple later, has been some great stuff.

And Rifkin - just cuz I make fun of Rush does not mean I don't want to hear some special selections. There is all sorts of good music kinda creepin' around in the shadows.

follow the lyric. the 'secret chord' is part of a progression. tongue

the beauty of that lyric (in its entirety) is how it is not properly interpreted...most of the time. it's a modern lyrical masterpiece.

and i've used that song as a quick qualifier, when discussing music with folks who claim to be aficionados. if i ask their opinion of the jeff buckley cover, and they cringe, i know to just move along.

Sure, but I meant as opposed to "magic chord". Leonard sings secret, Buckley sang secret, everybody I've heard at open mic nights (which is just about everybody!) sings secret.

Just sayin'.
