Hi everyone! smile I stumbled upon a photographer on Behance, Franz Steiner and really enjoyed his work. I was wondering if anyone could help to figure out how he achieved this kind of final effect and color tone.

Here are the pictures:

Some of the effects in the sample images... involves de-saturating the normal colors of the original images to take the conflicting original colors away... and to give the images a fairly black and white tonality as a base.

Then using curves as an adjustment layer...a pink or purple or blue color is created with the curves (for a pink wash pull up the rgb channel and also the red channel center of curve...for purple pull up the red and blue channels...for blue pull up the center of the blue channel curve).  The curve color is then broadly hand painted selectively on the image... with a very soft, very low opacity 4% white brush on the black mask. ( The white brush adds the soft colored wash...The more you paint in the same spot the stronger it gets... A black brush erases the effect where ever you dont want the effect).

This methodology would paint in all the nice color washes you see.  They would be clear, transparent, non destructive, and totally adjustable in all aspects because they are adjustment layers.   You could also add in a "Blending Mode" in addition to the curves... to give the effect more transparency or contrast or punch (try overlay, soft light, add, or multiply blending modes for example).

Much of the power of this visual effect depends on the quality of the original underlying images to begin with... and from there you have to become an artist to be able to selectively paint in the color washes and mask them on and off objects like arms or suits or walls for example.  You will also have to use the opacity slider on the individual layer many times to precisely control the intensity of the effect with artistic precision.  There might be 4 or 5 layers of color wash selectively and intelligently and artistically placed over the image in this case example.  You have to keep trying and making mistakes and erasing and fine tuning... till the image looks COOL to you.  Youre God in your images.  Hopefully people will think you are a budding genius altering reality so nicely in this manner.

These images are good because the underlying images are compelling on their own, and the retoucher exhibited some good choices and visual artistry to choose what the color pallet of each image should be...and where the washes should begin and end... and how strong they would be... where.

These images require trial and error, a good sense of visual artistry, and the ability to create un-real images that people like and perceive as a possible future trend (Hey, these are Vogue quality images...they look different/good/cool ! ).  These images are nothing but hand painted interpretations...with some good artistic and visual taste by the retoucher and photographer.  People are sick and tired of years and years of  Perfectly Colored  Images  over and over again...so they want something New, Different, and Artistic!  This guy gave us intelligently hand painted artistic images that are DIFFERENT.   Perfect Color is BAD... Artistic and stylistic interpretations are GOOD!  This has to be the future!!!  Right?  Yes!  Fashion Magazines almost always want New and Different imagery at almost any costs...thats how they make their money... by making the rest of us feel old hat and that our perfect colored images are now boring.

That looks like one of the Alien Skins plug in filters, maybe one of the 1970's slide films, such as Ektachrome from the 1970's.   I forget the filter's name, but they have one that gives it a magazine fashion look like in your link samples.  Hope that helps.
