female singers, with husky, throaty voices.
i don't know, i've always gravitated to that kind of voice, vs the standard lithe voices that have been the standard, since the baroque period. a couple of examples for context: exhibit a, johnette napolitano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlg91FG9m5Y exhibit b, cassandra wilson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO-yBBMCBXk and the epitome of the theme. ms. simone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnuEMdUUrZQ and i purposely picked "strange fruit" for this. i love this version of this tune even more than the vaunted version recorded by billie holiday. i love nina's voice more than billie's. plus, nina played the piano on this. and she fucking nailed it, on both accounts. A great story and a great film. My advice.... bump it to the top of your Netflix list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0feNVUwQA8U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Kvu6Kgp88 RBD Apr 18 16 12:03 am Link Always been partial to Jennifer Herrema from Royal Trux. Her voice sounds like it carries a switchblade and knows how to use it. But since we're talking about female vocalists, I have to bring up Diamanda Galás because I'll exploit any opportunity to bring up Diamanda Galás... so, Diamanda Galás, everybody! A powerhouse voice - not husky - but, the lowest female vocal type. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvP5ZVHRSeA crappy video quality - but good sound quality once she sings - and totally worth it, to hear somebody able to hold a Bb note that long and that well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0jC19eFx5c Apr 18 16 10:32 pm Link The F-Stop wrote: yes. surprised her name wasnt at top of thread. BTW, I don't know what determines a "fine singer" but if we need one, may be it could be one that derives more than half of their financial sustenance from their vocal chords.
