So, my site has been "outdated" for some time. I don't advertise, and didn't care. Pulled it, and now it's time for a refresh, and I need ideas. Obviously, I need good photo gallery quality, and no Flash cause iPhones can't display.

So, please...show me your website, or one that you think the design is exceptional.

Thanks big_smile

Hi Jim.

I have gone through something similar over the past couple of weeks, I was using my website as a portfolio more than anything else but I wasn’t very happy with it.

I had been using Koken as a Content Management System (CMS), see here: http://koken.me/

Koken is a very good tool and I would recommend it, especially to someone who has a background or a bit of experience with webdesign. However, I wasn’t able to get the best results out of it.

I wanted to change my website from a portfolio to something with more of a “Blog” feeling, while retaining the capability of displaying a gallery, slideshow and clickable thumbnails that would display big images across the screen; Also, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it so I had to find a balance between cost and features.

I am now using WordPress, I managed to learn the new system in more or less a week. My new website is now up and running, I haven’t added much content just yet but I am confident that this format gives me everything I wanted and I have the prospect to expand further if I decide to do so.

This is my new website: http://www.hvalladares.com

If you go to the post titled Ballintoy Harbour you will see an example of the main features I wanted in my website: A big main image, followed by text, then a slideshow and finally clickable thumbnails that bring up fullscreen images.

I managed to do the whole thing using exclusively free tools; the only things I needed to pay for are the domain name and webhosting.

There are tons of free tutorials and tips on how to customise wordpress to suit your needs, there are also loads of premium packages that are customised to suit individuals at different cost brakets.

If you are interested in finding out what bits and bobs I used, send me a PM, I will be happy to help.

Good luck.

I have seen embedded mpeg videos and gif animations used to replace Flash (dailymail.co.uk)  -- the gif technique works well with high res images if there are only limited frame transitions

I have seen scrolling background images with gapped foreground content used on rare occasion by the New York Times

Squarespace - $100 gets you a good website for the year. Easy to use, you can be up and running in an evening.

Jim I've had several clients who requested that I replace their Flash Slideshows... After communications with other web coders I found this to be the most expedient solution...  Albeit it requires a high comfort level with HTLM etc.  which anyone with a programming background will have...

<!-- SLIDESHOW NEXT PREV BUTTONS -->

<div id="NextPrev" class="center-div">
<table class="center-div"><tr><td>
<a href="#"><img src="JQuery/JQ-prev.png" width="30" height="30" id="prev" class="NextPrevBorder blockimage"></a>
</td><td>
<a href="#"><img src="JQuery/JQ-next.png" width="30" height="30" id="next" class="NextPrevBorder blockimage"></a>
</td></tr></table>
</div>

<!-- START IMAGE AREA -->
<table class="homeimage fullwidth"><tr><td class="td-center">

<!-- START JQUERY CYCLE -->
<table class="JQS-border center-div"><tr><td>

<!-- START JQUERY CYCLE -->
    <div id="JQCycle1" class="JQslideshow center-div" style="width: 800px; height: 500px;">

   <img src="JQuery/imageJQ-1b.jpg" width="800" height="500" alt="Image">
   <img src="JQuery/imageJQ-2b.jpg" width="800" height="500" alt="Image">
   <img src="JQuery/imageJQ-3b.jpg" width="800" height="500" alt="Image">
    <img src="JQuery/imageJQ-4c.jpg" width="800" height="500" alt="Image">
    <img src="JQuery/imageJQ-5f.jpg" width="800" height="500" alt="Image">
    <img src="JQuery/imageJQ-6c.jpg" width="800" height="500" alt="Image">

    </div>
</td></tr></table>
<!-- END JQUERY CYCLE -->

</td></tr></table>
<!-- END IMAGE AREA -->

Simply do a Google search for JQuery Slideshow code... there are literally dozens of examples...

As mentioned above animated .GIF's are an easy solution...
Here I've used it to change a garment's hue/chroma.
However yes frame rate can be an issue in this mix.

If you have experience with CSS then there are more elegant solutions...

Hope this helps...

i think the number of colors allowed would be the real issue.....a GIF certainly does not have many compared to jpeg. Most photos will suffer because of this.

personally, just use squarespace or something similar. all the dead artists are doing it. well, Avedon at least.
