Just curious, given that on a full frame 24mp camera files are usually 6000 x 4000 pixels. So when printing at 300dpi one divides the measurements by 300. In this case you would end up with an approximate 20 x 13 print.
How many use this formula?

The resolution vs the print size really depends on the viewing distance. You can print 6000x4000 to poster size or billboard size depending upon how far away the viewers are.

When I was submitting images to be printed in a publication that rule was an absolute minimum.   I use it as a rough guide for photo book printing but regularly go less for prints on canvas.

Correct, some though accept 240, depending on format.

My opinion, don’t worry about doing the math. Most modern dSLRs have so much resolution, you can print high quality to just about any size you want.

I made great 40x60 inch posters from my 10mp Nikon D200.

What do I do?

I use the crop tool. Set it to my target print size and then set the dpi to either 300 or 360 depending on the printer I’m using.

If it’s a massive print, like 40x60, I’ll consider cutting it in half. 150 or 180.

Do a light sharpening then print.

If you go down to 200 dpi you can make larger prints, but people stand back further when looking at larger prints.
