I knew two Marine Corps vets from WW2 who had Japanese skulls they'd brought home from the war, in the 1990s.
One, I worked with the Japanese consulate to return it with all the info that vet recalled. He refused to meet with or talk with them.
The other vet had no interest in letting the Japanese have it back. I lost track of him a few years later, so I have no clue what happened to it.
