About Me

Scott Ely is a professional photographer and photojournalist who has been making images for 33 years.  His love affair with photography began in Laguna Beach, California when his father allowed him to use his Minolta SRT 101 camera one afternoon.  That afternoon stirred a passion which is still burning 33 years later.

Scott is a graduate of the University of Southern California where he had a dual major in Business Administration and Film.  While at USC, Scott studied under James Folie who later went on to direct "At Close Range", "Glengarry Glen Ross", "The Chamber" and numerous other major motion pictures.

After graduating from USC, Scott worked as an assistant to numerous commercial photographers and photojournalists in Los Angeles.  Douglas Kirkland, Leigh Weiner, and Rob Gage are among the photographers that Scott worked with.

Scott went on to work as a freelance commercial photographer and photojournalist specializing in capturing images of people and events.  Scott has had the opportunity to photograph newsmakers in the world of sports, music, media and politics. His list of assignments has included names such as:  Styx, Christopher Cross, Air Supply, Oingo Boingo, Smokey Robinson, Dave Mason, Ricky Skaggs, Wynton Marsalis, Peter Jenkins, Bo Diddley Jr., George Sieffert, and John Edwards.  His clients have included:  The Paxton Media Group, The Apartment Magazine, The California Newspaper Partnership, Jamie Harvill, Flying Tigers, Blue Tarp Financial, Maranatha Music, Carolina Country Magazine, The Brainyard Advertising Agency, White Cap Construction/Home Depot, Looking Better Online, Women's Day Magazine, The Daily Courier, Perkins Palace, Vital Worship and Country Cottage Chic.

His work has won awards and been displayed in numerous juried art shows and competitions. Scott has been an exhibitor at the Laguna Beach Festival of Art in California, and at Down Towne Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina.

In addition, Scott has photographed professional sports since his college days.  He has shot a wide spectrum of events that includes: Formula 1 Racing, Football, Baseball, Tennis, Wrestling, Volleyball, Basketball, Track, Swimming and Equestrian events.  His images have been published hundreds of times.

Today Scott concentrates on photographing people, sports, and events from the perspective of a visual story teller.  He applys his experience in photojournalism to capture the stories that record our lives.  During the last few years Scott has photographed families, weddings, and youth sporting events.  He is also the founder of http://www.bestsportspics.com which specializes in action imaging for youth oriented leagues and sportinge events.
