Indian fashion is totally in, I'm talking about elaborate tribal north american headdress and attire like you just stepped out of a 50s western, or a... powwow Despite the media blackout attempts by Separatists experiencing guilt over the folly of their indiscretions in days of olde', Indian fashion is super hot ITT: Indian Fashion

First off. A woman would never really wear a Warbonnet. Another thing... I really shouldn't even get into how fucking pissed off this is going to make me. Also I don't enjoy seeing people try to group over 500 unique NATIVE tribes into one single idea or theme. It is irritating and shows how ignorance is oviously still all around us, even today. Another thing. Its not Indian, even if some trible members relate to this title that was given to them by Euro whites. That said I do not discourage people from wearing Native clothing. But rather make sure you do your research before stepping out in public and looking a fool wearing a Warbonnet. Please just make sure not to wear special and spirital items unless you truely follow the teachings of that tribe. Here is a great website that many people both Native and other races look to buy from amazing traditional fashion designers. There are some items in here used just for pow wows, so be noted that somethings even in this website are used for spirital practice. http://www.native-languages.org/clothing.htm Or more mod http://beyondbuckskinboutique.bigcartel.com/ More interesting things related to this topic I think all should read if they want to wear native attire.- http://m.guardiannews.com/commentisfree … pe=article This lady is cool as fuck. You want to really know Native fashion? http://beyondbuckskin.blogspot.co.uk/?m=1

Hot... no. Disrespectful... I'd say so. Honestly, I don't see what's sooo hot about watering down a culture because we think it looks "cute". Even more so when said culture was almost decimated. To me, it's the same as with those tribal tattoos. They aren't just "cool looking", they also hold a great significance to many people. I am okay with people adopting another culture and educating themselves, but be respectful.

This post from the amazing blog Native Appropriations settled my feelings about this issue. http://nativeappropriations.blogspot.co … dress.html I know not every Native person feels this way, but if some do, is it right to offend them just for the sake of looking "super hot"?

Like at a real powwow.

Also, I don't know who took the image, so I am not sure if this is considered an unsolicited critique, but, that warbonnet looks cheap as fuck. Considering the amount of time and artistry that goes into making them, this looks like utter shite. Overall, the whole image is just poorly done. It's like someone said, "Let's slap some paint and feathers on this broad and play Indians!". Also, this is an Indian fashion...

There isn't any traditional native culture in the world that I don't find fascinating. It is actually amazing how boring and generic western culture has become in comparison.

I've been shooting with some lovely [Asian] Indian models and I can't get enough of their traditional garb. I also lived for a while on the Zuni reservation in New Mexico; got to see plenty of locals in their full traditional regalia for ceremonies not open to most whities at the time (late '70s).

but the very first sentence of this post clarified that we aren't talking about saris did anyone read it? I literally used Separatists in a sentence. I figured someone would have found solace in that or commented on the factual accuracy "see when they left the united kingdom..." etc

I assure you, everyone else would have gotten a media-free pass.

You want to really know Native fashion? http://beyondbuckskin.blogspot.co.uk/?m=1 People have short attention spans. With this analogy, it's easier to understand the sanctity of Indian culture (yes, we are talking Native American Indians here): This may shed some light, quoted from a link within a link of yours: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/chelsea-vo … 62816.html Restricted Symbols In some cultures, some items are off-limits. Examples from Canada and the United States would be: military medals, Bachelor degrees (the actual diploma), and certain awards representing achievement in literature, music, or other fields. These items cannot be legitimately possessed or reproduced by just anyone, as they represent achievements earned according to a specific criteria. Yes, some people will mock these symbols. However in order to do this, they have to understand what the symbols represent, and then purposefully desecrate or alter them in order to make a statement. They cannot then claim to be honouring the symbol. Some people will pretend to have earned these symbols, but there can be serious sanctions within a culture for doing this. For example, someone claiming to have earned a medical degree (using a fake diploma) can face criminal charges, because that 'symbol' gives them access to a specialised and restricted profession. Warbonnets were important ceremonial regalia worn only by chiefs and warriors. Also, only men wore warbonnets. http://www.native-languages.org/headdresses.htm I learned a new fact today about Mohawks: http://www.truepunk.com/lifestyle/clony … k-rockers/

This is not something that many tribes find to be a point of contention, it is synonymous with other terms, just use context clues to figure out whats being talked about nobody thinks they are going to step into a bollywood film when they cross the border of an Indian reservation. native american, is that really the end all replacement word? did the tribes not have names? just because a word has more syllables doesn't make it politically correct for what its worth, I've referred to them as "natives" before, and other people got offended. ie. "this native chick" "the natives are coming"

"this native chick" "the natives are coming" I'm not trying to be offended for 500 other tribes. Its just unsettling for majority of people to believe or think of one image that covers all natives. Seriously you don't know how many joe smoes I run into and ask me "do you bang on a thunder drum and chant to your gods?" or "do you wear feathers in your hair and run around a fire?" I am not kidding I have grown ass men make fun of my own mother's culture. I think I am allowed to be offended if I choose to be for my tribe and my brothers and sisters in other tribes. Yes, tribes all have unique names and normally I do call them that individually when addressing them properly. But for this very general tread I don't think I need to do so. I don't think when I am filling out government or state paperwork there is a spot that allows me to put in what tribe I am in there is a slot that groups all of the tribes into one little section. When you use the word like that I hope they were offended. Its proper to call them by trible name is you know their tribe.

Indians = India. Native Americans = Native Americans. All sorts of no in this thread. While I don't personally find the fashion trend to be offensive to me, it's fans certainly are. Honestly, people have been misappropriating MY culture since the Hawaiian music and shirt trend in the 40s and 50s with their shitty plastic lei and grass skirt luau crap, but I take it in stride and realize most people assume (like in this case) that because it's "AMERICAN" it's ok to wear and make a joke out of it.

I think it's the sexualization of Native American women that I find so appalling in this current pop culture obsession. Native American women are 2.5 times more likely to be raped than any other women in the United States. One in three Native American women are raped in their lifetime. http://blackwingeddove.buzznet.com/user … an-indian/ Sacred items are taboo to use, but they're used nonetheless. Sexual assault (86% of which is committed by non-Native men) is never okay- and I can't support a trend which strengthens the "sexy princess Indian" image.
