Help, I'm planning on buying a Sekonic L-358 Flash Master and was wondering if it's the right meter to buy for the money. Did a search in forums and found a few articles but not all that helpful.
Your thoughts would be helpful.

I almost got an L-358. Then someone loaned me an L-758 for a couple of hours.

I didn't realize the difference between being able to profile the meter to the camera or not until I'd tried both meters side-by-side, and the L-758 was a winner.

Of course, now I have to buy a couple of Pocket Wizards... I hate having features I can't use.

I love my L-358.

One of the best investments I've made.

What are you trying to do with it? I like it as a general meter. I swapped it out for a 658 (I think) that has the pocket wizard transmitter in it and it does spot metering as well. Except for  the spot metering, I don't see a lot of difference between the two.
I'd buy another 358 anyday.

Right for the money depends on your use. If the feature set is what you are looking for get it. If you don't know anything about meters you'll probably spend more than you should by buying the 358. Actually, any reputable meter will do perfectly fine as long as it has the features YOU need.

Peace,
Cordell

Well based on what I've heard here, I've ordered it and hope it's what I want. I need something for metering outside shoots as well as studio setups. If this is it, then I've done well.

Thanks

I have had one since August.

On some shoots I use it often, on others I don't.

I have a L-358 and I love it!!!!!! , it is the best damn meter I have ever had!
I use to love my Minolta III untill I got the  L-358, now the poor old Minolta just sits in an old camera bag along with my 35mm film cameras, But personally I would like to have the L-758 that meter rocks and its so damn versitile but I have to stick with what I have  but one day soon the L-758 will be in my gear bag next  my back up meter the L-358 !

It makes you look like a Juan Officially Certified Pro Photographer and not a wannabe.

Its also very useful as a light meter. I would say that the 758 looks good too with its sensor profiles, but havent used it.

Get the 358 and PW chip in it, or if you have the dosh get the 758. I dont see much use for the spot meter however, ambient is always more accurate.

The 358 is a great meter. Pocket Wizards were mentioned.  PW's, although reliable, are way bigger than they need to be.  They are like having a pack of cigarettes on top of your camera. Yuck. Tamrac's Micro-Synch is more like having a 5-pack of gum, only smaller. Expect pocket Wizards' size to be reduced by about 3/4ths in the near future.  Currently they are kinda "old-school" and bulky.

If I hadn't had a sudden windfall, I would have ended up with an L-358 instead of the L-758.

They're both solid meters, but the L-758 has a couple of things that I wanted:

1) Meter-to-camera profiling, via computer-side client and USB transfer.

2) Incident *and* reflective metering without swapping the dome out for the spot finder.

3) Built-in Pocket Wizard integration without adding the module after the fact.

If you buy an L-358, add a 1-degree spot finder and the PW module, you're within $100 or so of an L-758 anyway.
