Why is plasma donating frowned upon?
I'd like everyones view on this. I recently needed some money and told me family for some quick cash I should donate plasma, and they were so disapointed they immediatley started saying they would give me money. But I went anyway, but why don't people understant like donating blood, plasma saves lives. Why are people so hypocritical about it, they'll donate blood, but they can't donate plasme cuz they get paid for it? WTF? Jan 03 08 01:37 pm Link Could be they don't understand what that means? Or maybe it's the whole donating for cash part. I dunno. That shit hurts! Kudos for you btw. Jan 03 08 01:41 pm Link egyptmachine wrote: Probably because wino's do it. Jan 03 08 01:43 pm Link Sinzi wrote: it doesn't hurt, I mean the needle goes in like butter cuz its so sharp, but if you get a rough technician then it might be uncomfortable. I told them that, but they think its only for winos or something. Some people are so closed minded, I can't believe I'm related to them Jan 03 08 01:44 pm Link Mike Carroll wrote: oh yeah I know that, but I ain't no wino, thats why I'm like WTF? Every time I donate blood (not plasma...) I get the trainee. Jan 03 08 02:11 pm Link How much do you get paid for plasma? When I donate plasma, I get some discount attraction tickets and a supermarket gift card for about $20. Jan 03 08 02:13 pm Link Things work a bit differently here, all donations are given altruistically. Donors get badges and rewards at milestones of 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 donations. Some of the plasma you donate in the States comes over here to us and I can vouch for the fact that it really does save lives. I donate on similar machines, I give my platelets, they are the things that help form scabs when you cut yourself and people on chemo and stuff don't have enough and need topping up. It really doesn't hurt. Whatever motivations you have don't matter, you do it - that's enough. Jan 03 08 04:36 pm Link What someone else thinks is irrelevant when you are being charitable. Do it because it feels right to you to do so. Jan 03 08 04:40 pm Link There is nothing wrong with it, and any kind of stigma about it...well I've never heard one and I would love to trounce it biologically... Jan 03 08 04:41 pm Link I have been donating blood for nearly 30 years. I've never donated plasma because it is so time consuming: they draw your blood, separate the plasma out and put your blood back in. When I donate blood, I'm in the center and out in 30 minutes or so, and that includes the pre-donation health check and answering the questionaire. I guess the only folks with the time on their hands for regular plasma donation are retired folks and winos. I knew a few college students who donated plasma when they were short on cash, but that's about it. Jan 03 08 05:30 pm Link Some employers here allow people out of work to donate. I tend to do mine on works time but my employer would be hypocritical if they refused to allow me to do it during my working day Jan 03 08 08:45 pm Link ha actually i know ALOT of college students do this as much as they can good money for what you have to do... lol and coming from a nurse it can save a life!!!! Jan 03 08 08:48 pm Link Out of interest do you know what they get paid, I know that it's not something that will get brought in here but I'm intreagued Jan 03 08 08:52 pm Link Miss Jessie wrote: here in WI at least at one place it was 25 a time. or 200 a month Jan 03 08 08:53 pm Link I'm actually considering doing it myself, since I'm a bit strapped for cash. Might as well...make a little money AND do some good at the same time! Jan 03 08 09:22 pm Link Des Tinee wrote: Know what hurts, and throws your body into a major upheaval? Donating eggs. I looked into when my friend was having trouble staying pregnant. I was going to be a surrogate for her, when they found out what was wrong and she was able to carry to term. After going through the batteries of tests, I decided to help out some other women who can't get pregnant, since I don't have a problem doing so (thank heavens for IUDs). Jan 03 08 09:26 pm Link By me, they say $70 the first week and $30 for each time after that. I donate whole blood though, so I don't know from experience. I can't use them because my insides are too damaged. At least someone can use them to have a baby. Jan 03 08 09:37 pm Link Not a thing wrong with it! So what if they pay it's time consuming. I used to be a regular blood donner, I was paid in cookies and juice! Jan 03 08 10:04 pm Link Carrie_K wrote: Where I live they gave me $30 for my first donation, then $55 for my second, then after that its 20 and 45 if you go twice a week Jan 04 08 03:07 am Link Des Tinee wrote: OMG bone marrow? Has anyone here ever done that?! I would assume they pay you well Jan 04 08 03:08 am Link isn't that selling? I think I need to make an appointment Jan 04 08 03:37 am Link damn double post ........ I got clicky fingers Jan 04 08 03:37 am Link Photo- op wrote: That's what I was thinking. If you're getting paid, you are not donating. Jan 04 08 03:54 am Link egyptmachine wrote: I'm on the national bone marrow donors registry. They don't pay for that either, but you do know you are possibly saving a seriously ill person. And you get to stay in the hospital for two days eating that wonderful chow! Jan 04 08 06:08 am Link My dad told me not to either, but I donated twice a week for a year when I lived in Madison. I donated twice in Milwaukee but the place was sketch as hell. I can't find a place near me now, but if I could I would consider it. I have two little scars on my arms now, so everyone knows where to stick the needle when I go to the hospital. Ha. Jan 04 08 06:29 am Link with the red cross (you get no cash) the $$ you would get goes to pay for their charitable services, as does the profit the donation company makes (notice IBPI and those other companies aren't rushing in to disaster areas to help people).... the pay-for-donating places are companies....not charities not that either is wrong...but there is a difference. Red Cross is a donation, the other is a sale. Jan 04 08 08:15 am Link for the amount of pain and little money, it's not worth it. egg donation is where it's at, but that is a world of pain. lotta money though. Jan 04 08 08:23 am Link egyptmachine wrote: Donating blood is one thing selling blood is something else entirely. I'd never sell my blood or my plasma, but I do donate blood whole blood about three times a year. I'm type O-, so my stuff is coveted since since anyone can use it - very handy when working with trauma cases. Jan 04 08 08:28 am Link |
