I thought it might be helpful to start a list of thrift and used clothing stores in So Ca. I am putting it in this forum because it is a wardrobe related thread.

I thought people could also share good and bad stories about the places in question.

St Vincent De Paul
210 North Avenue 21, Los Angeles, CA 90031

Good buys: the books and the as is section. For the as-is section be prepared to be there at 8:45 waiting for the 9am opening. Bring a friend. People will trample you in order to sift though everything. Some people say it is gross, I say a hugo boss jacket, liz claiborn sweater, kenneth cole top, full length rabbit? fur jacket, leather jacket and oh yeah 10 pounds of chiffon fabric for $14 is the best deal in town. I always find something in the as-is section.

Also the outside chairs go from between 1-2 each. Right now sitting on a nice padded 99 cent backless photo stool.

Bad buys: the rest of the store

Goodwill
just down the street

This store is great because everything is priced as a set price per item type. Women's clothing is 1.50 a piece whether it is a horrible old t-shirt or a really cool black german peter pan collar dress.

It's a Wrap
www.itsawraphollywood.com

2 locations one in Burbank one off of Pico and Robertson

Now this store is on the higher end for items, I just spent $25 each on these great tops with obi's. What makes the store special is a few things:
1. these are designer items at Sears prices. They have everything from H&M type clothing to Bill Blass couture.
2. the clothes are all from the movies and tv which is
a. cool
b. useful because you know they will work with lights well since they have been chosen to be seen on camera
3. VINTAGE HEAVEN. They keep having vintage sales with parasols, and crinolines, and amazing 1920's dresses.

The downside is that most of the available wardrobe is between a size 0-6.

Handy tip: get on their mailing list for coupons and other great goodies like a heads up on the vintage sales. I have gotten an original Irene, and a Mr. Blackwell custom dress both of which retail for between 1,000-2,000 on the vintage market.

upscale resale
23501 Ridge Route #G in Laguna Hills
http://www.sco-oc.org/thriftstore.html

i used to volunteer there so i went through EVERYTHING

the good: the books and the videos are AWESOME!!
baby clothes are in excellent quality and so pretty. the materials are great as well. once in a while we get expensive brand name stuff in great shape and we separate those in different hangers.
great toys stuffed animals and kiddie books.
lots of vintage stuff. we once had a bible that was huge and hand written and dusty and very very old (cant remember exact date but it was 1800 something). it was so awesome but i had no munnies and i wasnt sure what i'd do with it
the ladies there are so nice and make good cookies

the bad: adult/youth clothes. they all have shoulder pads on them or are L. i saw a pretty dress there once but it was 100% polyester and my skin got bad reaction to it at the time

I have shopped at all the ones already listed and they rock! So instead, I will add to it:

www.BuffaloExchange.com
Buffalo Exchange
14621 Ventura Blvd
Sherman Oaks, CA 91403
(818) 783-3420

I have found some awesome vintage clothes there that were thrown in with some of the other clothes.  I know that they have a few otehr locations in LA, but the one is Sherman Oaks has always brought me a lot of luck!

Not in Cali, but loved reading this thread.  I frequent the thrift circuit in my area as well.

Ive never been much of a thrift store shopper although I should be since I'm almost always on a budget smile I just always thought of Good Will when I think "Thrift Store" Although it looks like you all were able to find some great items at the mentioned locations. I might just have to check it out and find some treasures of my own. Thank you everyone this is a great thread.

My 2 faves (as an avid LA thriftshopper):

1) Squaresville in Los Feliz

1800 N Vermont Ave (at Franklin)
Los Angeles, CA 90027-4213
Phone: (323) 669-8464

2) Thrift Store that benefits the Blind (I don't even think it has a name)

On Fairfax near Canter's Deli on the same side of the street...sorry I don't have the exact address...
But it a HUGE selection of clothing, all organized by color and style. Most everything is $5.99 and under, at least the last time I was there.

The city of Hemet (In Riverside County)
is a big retirement city.
We have a whole street devoted to thrift and vintage shops.

And a lot of what ends up in these shops is grandma and grandpa's old belongings after they pass away.
There's always a good find here or there, from clothing to antiques.

Tippecanoe's in Laguna beach.
shoes shoes shoes. it has more of a boho feel.
and its right next to taco loco! (mmm potato tacos)

Salvation army in San Clemente.
I always find goodies there. I bought this badass james dean sketch there for 30 bucks that turned out to be worth 150. but hes too sexy to part with.

Theres also some good antique stores on Del Mar in san clemente...great jewelry.
