anyone have opinions on britek?
I have a guy who wants to sell me
4 PS-300H lights  (3 of the lights have never been used)
4 stands
2 or 3  32 x 32 softboxes
1 barndoor
2  Silver / Black Reflection Umbrella 32
1 Transparent Umbrella 24"
2 carrying bags (1 for stands and one for lights and softboxes)
2 standard reflector
1 small softbox (its like a a foot squire)
4 15 foot cables
and I believe there was a few other small items in the case
all for $300.00
is it worth it?
side notes, my wife and I just do this a hobby for something to do, we are far from pros, (basically, she uses a nikon d50 and I have  a D80)

thanks in advance

For 300 bucks, I'd buy it. Britek is kind of crap, but a full set of 4 strobes and stands, even if kind of crappy, could be used for lighting backgrounds, hallways..I'd buy them so I wouldn't feel bad about beating the crap out of them.

they are 150 w/s each, I believe. One AB400 from Alien Bees (160 w/s) is going to cost near that new, with no modifiers or stands.  Better build by far, but for 300 bucks it's a decent deal.

EDIT:

Buy it. If you hate it, put it on Craigslist for 400. It will go in a day, or part it out.

even though Britek are cheap monolights, for everything you are listing, yeah..I would take that for 300.00.  I've seen people who had the absolute best equipment and still turned out garbage. Its all about steps. Get used to the cheap stuff and work your craft until you feel you've arrived at the point that you really need better quality.

The price is good for what you are getting.  I shot with Briteks when I started out, it was all I could afford.  That's the way it is with lots of photography and always remember that the only important piece of equipment is the eye of the shooter!  If you don't have that you will never get good work.  If you do have it, you will always make the equipment work for you.  Upgrade as you can afford it.  I gave my Briteks away to a promising beginner when I went to Elinchroms.

A couple of years ago I bought almost the exact set from Ebay. For maybe a little more, I don't remember.

I currently  use Alien Bees as my primary lights but I still whip out my Briteks or some of the components. I've had only one of the lights go bad on me.

I say go for it!

I've used Briteks, matter of fact I used them on a themed shoot that wound up on a billboard on Beverly Blvd and on Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles. My only annoyance with them is the lack of control, meaning you can't stop them down the way you can more expensive lights, but for the cost difference I can work with it.

My vote, buy 'em.

well, I had a total of 8 people said to go for it and 1 said to run (3 people e-mailed me)
so I got them.
besides what i had listed, the guy tossed in 6 or so back drops, a boom stand and other small odds and ends. if I added it all up new it was over a 1000.00 dollars worth of stuff.

I am going to start setting it all up today to play around with it all. I don't think I even have room for it all in the small room I want to set up in (maybe 3 lights total can fit)

but anyway, thanks to all who responded
