Difference between High Fashion and Editorial?
I have been so confused about this for a very long time. Im sure there are official definitions, but I'd like to get other people's opinions. What is the exact criteria to make a photo: Editorial? "Edgy" High Fashion? Again. I know there are official terms (I can tell the difference between Commerical and High Fashion) but again I want to get people's opinions. Nov 09 08 01:34 am Link i am no expert, but my quick shorthand response is this: high fashion is based mainly on clothes, representing a designer's line and styles specifically. editorial is more of a story. that's why "editorial spreads" in magazines are usually themed and actually seem to tell a story. i hope i'm right. if not, ignore me. im really tired. Nov 09 08 01:36 am Link Editorial are illustrative photographs that tell a story or follow a story or article. High end fashion is just that: images of high end fashion, emphasis on the clothing over the model. Don't be fooled into thinking they're the same as they can both allow great room for creativity. Nov 09 08 01:37 am Link I Like that definition. it makes a lot of sense. and justifies calling some of my pictures editorial (since i never get concerned about fashion labels since my shoots usually have a $10 budget, heh) Nov 09 08 01:39 am Link All fashion is about lifestyle and aspiration. Clothes are to an extent secondary to this, just props really. That said, the line between "high" and "editorial" fashion is often so blurred as to be entirely dependent on the opinion of the viewer. If that viewer is the editor of Vogue then maybe you should listen to the opinion; in most other cases, take what is said with a grain of salt. SFSF. Nov 09 08 09:36 am Link Commercial Photography, editorial style (but not editorial) Editorial and Commercial are both modeling and photographic categories. High Fashion (Haute Couture, which literally translates to "High Sowing") is a type of clothing and has nothing specifically to do with photography. "Fashion" as it relates to photography can be commercial or editorial, although "fashion" is frequently (and incorrectly) used in place of "editorial" (i.e. "fashion agency", "fashion photography", "fashion model"). Photography of fashions can be broken down into two categories, commercial or editorial. The vast amount of photography involving fashions is commercial (advertising, catalog, look books, etc.), however a lot of commercial ad photography for high end designers is shot in an editorial style (think of the Guess ads just as an example). And it gets more complicated in that the models in those commercial ads for high end designers, and the photographers who shoot those ads, are usually the same models and photographers you will see doing the true fashion editorial work featured in the magazines. As far as fashions are concerned, there are two types of modeling and photography: editorial and commercial. We build our brand shooting or modeling for fashion magazine editorial stories, we build our bank accounts shooting commercial fashion. Americans speak a shorthand version of English with a truncated vocabulary (I call it "Business English"), as a result our vocabulary can be imprecise. Hence the name editorial. Of course these lines get blurred all the time. They are basically terms used so that photographers, art directors, designers... can communicate with each other. Then their are subcategories that photographers of each genre use to describe the type of shoot they are doing. Editorial for fashion or commercial photography means that you are shooting images that tell a story. Nov 09 08 12:57 pm Link Simple definitions: Editorial Fashion Images: Fashion images commissioned by magazines for magazine editorial stories that reflects trend. Not always showing the garments. Advertising Fashion Images: Commissioned by a the brands advertising agency (art directors) Images that influence the public via adverts in press billboards etc re the brand name. Catalogue Fashion: Images commissioned by catalogue creative department (art directors) or some times a bellow the line advertising agency/design company that sell fashion off the page (Consumer mail order) Look Book Fashion: Images commissioned by a brand manager or designer that are informative showing garment detail, cut, colour etc. Usually created for the trade to sell to in-store buyers or fashion retail shop owners. Great question.. Bruce Smith Oct 18 14 07:15 am Link PS These various types of fashion image terms are used to relate to usage and very often relate to the photographers fee structure for images usage, i,e editorial (low rate) catalogue med rate) advertising (high rate) Oct 18 14 07:18 am Link You can't put exact on anything. Photography is an art form, and art is going to be all over the place. Editorial is exactly what it says it is.......images designed to illustrate articles the magazine is doing. Fashion is work for advertisers, placed in publications. Edgy, means more extreme images, that might be outside the normal acceptance level of clients, whether fashion or editorial. Sometimes you will find more edgy images in editorial, because the magazine chooses to "push the envelope" of acceptance, whereas an advertiser would not want to risk negative reaction by the public. Fashion imagery is representing clothes, accessories and everything that fashion industry makes and sells. High fashion is basically gala and special occasion, such as extravagant wearable pieces of art. It's defined by the impact it leaves, it's not everyday wear. Often it borderlines costume. And everything and anything in between. Oct 20 14 05:45 pm Link |
