In another thread, someone was concerned about getting a "traditional beauty dish look". There was talk about power requirements and light positioning. More than one person suggested the dish is typically used very close to the subject, maybe about 1-2 feet away.

Could some people please post links to photos that have the "traditional beauty dish look", preferably with the dish used about 1-2 foot away?

I think I know the look that people are referring to, but I'm not sure.

thanks,
Glen

In all cases the BD was less than 2 feet from the model's nose.

How far are you away from the model? I would assume if you were far away using a zoom lens, you would get some flare.

One piggy back question - since BD has to be used close to the model, does that mean that BD is only good for head shots?

yeah but it doesn't tell me if he's 10 ft away or 20 ft away.

if the shot is at 150mm, then you can usually figure it out.

Mostly about 8 feet I guess, using a 70-200 on a 1.6 crop body. The 2nd shot is older and was with a 100 f/2.0 so probably about 5-6 feet, and the closeup eye shot was with a macro zoom at about 5 feet IIRC.

The BD is normally angled so that I can't see the surface from where I shoot so flare is not a problem. This is an unretouched proof from the same session as the 3rd pic. As you can see, the BD is pretty close!

It doesn't have to be used that close, but you won't get the full effect from 5-6 feet away. However, they do also make nice key lights for fashion as they are crisper than a s/b without as much danger of hotspots as a bare bulb.
