Your experience with any particular brand?

Need to carry one DSLR, 2-3 lenses, light meter and small stuff like cards, batteries, wizards, etc

The Lowepro Slingshot  is probably the best solution I've found.

I use a National Geographic Explorer, and it's been great for me.

It's a real backpack, so you can hike right along without things bouncing around. Once shooting, it usually comes off my back and goes on the ground (watch for scorpions!). It's discreet, so it doesn't look like you're carrying $10,000 worth of equipment, but it handles equipment nicely.

Mine has stood up to about three years of abuse, including several long trips and nearly daily use in-season. I'm getting ready to break it out again as the weather warms.

I have 3 LowePros:  a belt pack, a shoulder bag, and a LowePro Computrek AW (All Weather).  They are very well designed and high quality.

The backpack lets me carry two DSLRs, five lenses, a big tripod, and numerous filters and accessories comfortably and securely.

There was a good backpack thread awhile back, I wonder if someone can find it, because it listed a bunch of good ones.

This one is simple ,and straight forward enough .

I have a few quality LowePro's but if you are looking for an inexpensive bag of great quality...Amazon has a Canon brand backpack for around $40 shipped. They are a perfect size for 1 or even two DSLR's and a few lenses and accessories.

Search for Canon Deluxe Photo Backpack 200EG.  I have carried two of them all over the world, they are very durable and other than the big "CANON" badge on them they look fine.

Most importantly, they are about half the price of comparable packs.

Might be worth ripping the badge off, or sewing over it.

Or you might try the Tamrac Expediton 5 as this is a little smaller.  I've carried mine around the world.  The smaller size might be important if you travel by air as the airlines are getting more strict with regard to carry-on baggage limitations.

Finally got to see one---very light, great quality---carries as much as my Lowepro Computrekker AW, yet is as light as my Think Tank Ultralight.

Its For your Expensive Equipment...

Get a Good One..

Good ones usually have a padding that will help protect things from abuse of a Backpacker...

From Experience.. a truck driving over your Backpack..

They are usually?...Sewin better..with better Zippers..

Camera bags can get pretty heavy when loaded up with all you need..

My Normal weight of my back pack is 68 pounds..This includes 2 very large 8x10 portfoilios..Never know when or where your gonna run into your Dream Model....3 bodies....1 dispoable camera....5 lenses..2 flashes..batteries..tape..first -aid..survival kit...couple granola bars..2 emergency blankets..everything i can throw in there..

So ya dont want the seams to tear out and leave a trail of lenzes and granola bars in your trail..lol

(I think you edited your message while I was writing my reply... I think you mentioned the F2 model as being a good one.)

Gee, thanks for pointing that out.  I own three Domke bags and I never knew they also make backpacks.  I've got the F1X, F2 and F3X and all are shoulder bags.  Looking at the photo of the F2 backpack, it looks very similar to a Bob Krist bag I got a few years ago through LL Bean.  The Domke bags have been great but unfortunately (at least for me) there doesn't seem to be one right bag for all circumstances.

Thanks to this thread I just ordered the Andy Biggs Kiboko bag.

I've got a feeling that we photographers can never have too many camera bags.  smile
