I know this looks like yet another tethering thread, but after using the search feature, finding many on programs to use, I couldn't find an answer to my question.

Is it possible to tether the 5d and see "real time" on a PC monitor? Pre shot as opposed to post shot?

It would be awesome to set up a shot on a larger monitor as opposed to the view finder.

Thanks,

Gary

mk II has liveview and so it can do that using HDMI. not sure about mk I.

for my shoots i tether (using HDMI) to a TV which becomes the back of the camera. but normally i don't use liveview. liveview doesn't seem to work with strobes (i just get a lot of black on the monitor), just with continuous lighting. so i take the shot and then chimp off the TV. customers love being able to see how the shoot is going.

Not with the 5 D.  You can send the LCD image to a TV monitor, not a lap top. for quicker viewing than true tethering.

if you tether with hdmi take the weight off the connector at the camera (i do it by wrapping the cable around the lens barrel). otherwise the signal goes wonky and the tv cuts out (or at least mine does). you can also buy third-party tethering straps. i have one long HDMI normal cable that goes into a connector that connects to a cable that is large HDMI to small HDMI and that goes into the camera. check around on cable pricing. some places (like best buy) are way more expensive.

I tether all the time.  I use the Canon software and connect to my laptop.  I do that when I'm printing pics on location and have had no difficulties with it.

I use the older 5D mk1.

Sorry, @Fun City, but I think you are wrong.

You can do it on a 5D Mk II, but not on a 5D Mk I. The reason being that that camera does not support having the mirror up and the sensor activated at the same time, both of which are essential to the function.

So, yes, you can tether the 5D. What you cannot do is the heart of the OP's question: preview the shot, aka "live view."

I sent an e-mail to the company inquiring about my set up. I'll post the moment I hear anything.

I received the following e-mail from breezebrowser.com. It seems I can accomplish what I want with my 40D but not my 5D.

I'm sorry the original Canon EOS 5D does not support live view. Canon introduced live view with the Canon EOS 40D, Rebel XSi/450D and 5D Mark II. Older camera models don't have this capability.
