Yesterday a woman came through my check-out line at PETCO wearing a T-shirt she got as a cast member in Halloween Horror Nights. I commented on her T-shirt and she allowed as how she had been doing Halloween Horror Nights for a long time. I told her I know a lawyer from the Tampa/St. Pete area who is also a cast member. She responded with "Oh, you mean Carl. Yes, I've know Carl for a long time." I don't remember her name.

This is legitimately for real... So at one point on Saturday I'm looking around trying to figure out where they are going to bury my body, because I know that it is too steep and there are too many steps, stairs and boulders for any vehicle or even a motorcycle or 4 wheeler or horse, and there is no way any person or people can carry me back down the mountain because it is so steep and narrow. So I was looking for a nice shady spot under a tree. Yeah, it was that kind of a weekend. Soooooooooo many stories. Once I get past survival mode I'll write a telenovella and let you know what all happened. Ultimately I am fine and unharmed ....but holy hell...wowsers! Gotta love those DR adventures.

So which idiot has a shoot on the 4th at the beach at sunset because that was the only day a model(who is specificly flying in to shoot with me)was available... And guess which idion now has to find a beach that even remotely has a chance to have parking? And guess which idiot has to figure all this out...and make images like the ones I am kinda known for, with unpredictable wind and weather conditions...wll while not getting home till about noon on the 4th... I picked a bad time to stop sniffing glue

I picked a bad time to stop sniffing glue Chris, not to sound like a dick, but stop worrying about what Mother Nature is going to toss your way.. No situation is perfect. Whatever you're given, use your skills to make the best of the situation.. Prime example, I had a shoot today, first thing this morning that was suppose to make use with all natural light coming into the models bedroom for a lingerie shoot.. Well, it was pouring like a mother and no where near the light coming in that I needed.. I could have pouted, sent the MUA home who came from Odessa (not Ukraine), packed my shit up and went home.. Instead, I figured out how I could take these lemons and make a killer lemon martini.. Solution? Use what light I had coming in, take a strobe and turn on the modeling lamp and bounce into a silver reflector and jack my ISO up to around 3200 to even 8000ISO... Finish up by making some delightful images.. Here's a sample.. Bottom line, don't sabotage your shoot before you REALLY know what you have to work with.. And even then, take what you have and use it to your advantage.. You have to be flexible whether you're shooting on location or in the studio/studio setting..

I've tentatively got a sunrise shoot to avoid the possible crowds. I'd try to find out which beaches will have official fireworks and stay away from those, there is a good chance whatever beach you go to will still have fireworks so maybe you can work those into the backround.

Well..problem solved itself, model has postponed the fla trip till August... Here was the deal, she was making a special trip to fly in last second here just to shoot with me,tomorrow, then fly to chicago...tomorrow being the only day she could do this(origionally she was coming down the entire weekend) The cheapest flight was $950 to here then chicago..... Think about it,$950 to basicly shoot with me with kinda iffy conditions and locations(I mean I had a location but it is a kinda a one trick pony location that is only good for sunsets over calm water...no beach,ect)..*thinks about the math, who in their right mind pays 950 to shoot with me,,that in itself is concerning...there are infinately better shooters that charge half that if she was in fla*... And for what Best case scenario is there is a 25% chance we get images like the ones of april I got in the Keys 75% chance of either a rainout or another grey sunset.... And this is why I was stressing...the ammount of money she was going to pay to fly herewould not equal even the best case scenario.... So probably she comes down fetcon week(not a fetish llama but I told her that week I will be free to shoot).. So Should I try to book another shoot tomorrow or just drink beer and eat sushi all day

So Should I try to book another shoot tomorrow or just drink beer and eat sushi all day That's her issue, not yours.. I've shot weddings with hurricanes 3 days out and the weather is shit.. Not my fault they didn't bother to take into consideration what weather is like that time of year.. I only deal with what I have control over and make the best of what is handed to me.. That's the mindset you have to have.. If the client is stupid and doesn't have contingency plans or chooses to do a shoot during an iffy time of year, again, not my issue I just create the best I can with what I'm handed.. When you worry about the mistakes of the client and don't concentrate on what you CAN control, you'll never succeed.. Weather you can NEVER control, but you can control how you handle the situation at hand..

I could do everything right from lighting, poses and composition, but if an aperture blade doesn't open properly or a shutterblade sticks or worse yet, the labs chemistry is bad or the tech an idiot, I'm screwed.. The unknown is what pushes us to succeed and get better.. Working through the possible fuck ups ahead of time, generally means having back up gear, keeps the fear at best because you already know how to handle it.. Had a photographer here that was doing a fashion shoot at nite.. Her power pack blew and had no lights.. Deadline was the next day to get images to the client.. This is the film days.. Photographer noticed there were a lot of motorcycles around the area she was shooting.. Found out who owned them and persuaded them into lining up the bikes and she used the headlights to light the shoot.. Shit was awesome.. That's the thing, you can't worry about the unknown, you can only prepare yourself for some sort of failure that you will have to over come.. And yes, sometimes the solution is just saying fuckit and go home.. But most of the time there is a solution, you just have to be creative and willing to be uncomfortable..

Happy 237th Independence Day! In 13 years it will be the 250th. That will be called the Sestercentennial or Semiquincentennial (half of 500 years). We will have to wait 13 years to see what is more popular but I have a feeling it will be Sestercentennial. Have a safe and happy 4th!

Wow,all I can say after that 45 minute experience is thank you Florida D.O.T for giving me a $100 Tax free bonus on my per diem for getting a clean inspection....(we get bonus' for a clean inspection report with no violations) I meanjy daym...they were really hitting the inspections hard on both sides at the wildwood scales.. Pulled me into the barn for a complete. level 1(that is a full truck I8nspection and paperwork) Its strange that Florida is so hard asssed during hollidays(have seen them inspecting on Christmas)...yet the 72 hour nationwide blitz half the stations are closed

I'm usually hesitant to add a MUA to shoots because it can add more complications ( another person to rely on...what happens if one or the other doesn't show up, etc), sometimes wrangling a model is tough enough. Though I might have one to work with for the Tampa trip it might just be locking down the/a model that is the tricky part.

If you use Shelley, Mike, there is 1% percent chance she's not going to show.. If something is horrifically wrong with one of her kids or her house is on fire.. If she's hired, she will be there... I've worked with her twice and no issue and a buddy of mine has worked with her multiple times including a trip to Miami and again, no issue.. If you can get Cory, pretty confident that there will be no issues either.. And I can honestly say that my editing time on Cory's current images has been cut in half because of the quality of the make up work.. So that time alone is worth a top flight MUA.. Regardless of who the MUA is..
