Smiling/laughing can be great as long as it fits the concept and isn't cheesy. Here are mine:

Sometimes, I like to do informal / casual nude portraits.  Sometimes, I make the model smile.

Natalia Faina (almost 18+) & I always have a blast when we get together.

Do you ask the model to smile, or does she smile spontaneously in response to something you do or say?

I try to capture a smile or two when shooting nudes because I want to remove some eroticism.  I want to display a sense of playfulness and comfort in her own skin regardless of her size.

In doing some homework, I found a blog entry that raises the same question I raised:

That is an enigmatic smile.

Here is a photographer's work that I enjoy that I suppose would fit into the "Snapshots" category... but there are plenty of smiling nudes done to perfection for the style.

(I have enjoyed this thread because inevitably we end up with outtakes of the model smiling when we are working on a more "artistic" concept and unfortunately, those real, spontaneous images are often not usable except in an outtakes gallery.)

I have never understood why so many models think it is uncool to smile. I try hard to capture laughs and smiles.

I have a few in my portfolio. The first two have a slight fashion component to them. The third was from a lighting workshop held at my studio.
