Tropical Photography wrote: Because the reality is Mark, it's happening here, too. Too many people think what we as photographers is so damn simple and ANYONE with a digital camera can do so they put little to no value on the skills needed. Most who do this, when asked why they don't do it, reply with "I don't know how.". Well, if it's so damn easy, why don't you know how to do it?? I've done some product stuff and it's not easy. I wouldn't even say I do it well, but I understand what it takes to do it well. This asshat doesn't and with the attitude he shows in his profile, just makes him a bigger asshat. A professed newb but he's going to charge you like someone with years of experience because he gives it his all!! And the sad thing, there are too many businesses that think they can pay squat for work like this just because it's digital. Because all we do is push a button. This is so true on so many levels it's not even funny.. I have been told this before (names have been changed to protect the dumbasses) "My Uncle Dispshit has a camera .. he said you charge do much.." Then go use Uncle Dipshit... but remember this, you never know how expensive a pro is UNTIL you use and amateur and the fuck it up. Is an amateur going to be able to hand hold a piece of long glass and shoot your wedding from the back of a church at 5000 iso and make it look good, is an amateur going to be able to light that glassware you want a product shot of with out having everything in the room reflecting off of it. Is an amateur going to be .. Holy Christ I could go on and on... I get paid what I get and charge what I do for the simple reason.. When the shit hits the fan I can get the photo. Can some asshat who "Owns" a digital camera do that on a consistent basis - no. Problem is way to many think they can, charge half what they should if not less, fuck up a job and then have no answers why. When I started out 25 years ago, I was good, not great, but good. Good enough to be one of the top 1500 in the World at age 23 and 24, twice nominated for the Pulitzer, so if I want to kick some asshat in the balls for being a moron, I will and hopefully they will learn something from it. When I did start out I had no intention of getting in to some of the photography I do today - youth sports/dance being one of them. Both of which I got into because I was asked after a asshat with a camera fucked up and screwed a lot of people. Once again, a pro comes to the rescue. I did the same thing with the UFL when they had a team here last year. They hired a guy that talked a really good game, by the second week of the season I had taken his job and I didn't even try that hard. Doing I do TF shoots? Yes. But ONLY if 1.) She's hot... 2.) It's worth my time and I can make either a portfolio piece or a promo piece out of it. 3) She's hot - oppps said that already. Hell one of those TF shoots turned into a cover : Most of the football I shoot is on spec - but I sell it via my agency commercially and can make a killing. So I am not saying do do TF, but don't blow your own horn and say you charge like a vet when you don't have the credentials to back it up. Oh and woof, woof I bite too /rant

In light of the current conversation going on in the thread: If I begin charging for my services, I'll be a better photographer? Actually, I do this for the fun and the art. I wouldn't begin to interfere with people who do this to earn a living...

Actually, I do this for the fun and the art. I wouldn't begin to interfere with people who do this to earn a living... Charging or not charing for your services isn't the problem these days. It's delivering a quality product so that both the client and artist are satisfied. No money doesn't=free. I did a wedding two years ago around christmas. A friend of a friend called me and told me about an asshat 'tog taking a "down payment" of his complete fee up front then promptly fell off the face of the earth. A grand out the window of a young couple just starting out. I did the job pro bono. Paid my assistant myself, only to have her tell me later she gave her pay to the couple as a wedding gift. It was a night wedding, and she wanted shots with candle light. Then there was the prosessional line with sparklers instead of swords over head. Best 5 hours I have ever spent at not getting "paid". Another 5 processing them. I'm not in Scott's class, nor in a lot of my peers, but I also have a steady gig doing what I love and don't have to scratch out a living shooting weddings. I had the time, had enough skill to pull off the shots and I didn't need any money to give value to my time. Every year since I get a chirstmas card thanking me. I can't put a value on that either.

I'll look forward to hearing the stories Because apparently he likes to shoot real low angles, very artistic, Dutched camera and a sense of height to the image And of course to get these he has to lay on the floor And also apparently he has a bad hip you know... So when you have to call the EMS to get him up cause he's gotten down there and can't get back up, I'm thinking lollery will ensue
