If I could just hijack this thread for a mini-moment...since you guys are all vegan (or a variation thereof), maybe one of you could explain a joke for me - I must be really dense because I just don't get this one.

This is in the August issue of Esquire Magazine..."Funny Joke from a Beautiful Woman"  (As told by Abigail Spencer):

    I'm better than you".

...I just don't get it...somebody please help me out here...

Vegetarian EXCEPT I very occasionally have chicken or turkey breast. Nil red meat. Don't eat eggs or cheese often, avoid products with animal products like hard cheeses, pesto, gelatine etc. I don't wear leather, feathers, fur etc.

I don't get how what I eat would have any correlation with how I model. I could be shovelling down pizza, steak & chocolate all week and you wouldn't know when I hit the shoot or catwalk wink I guess this is a 'peta' sort of thing.

Vegetarian.
Been a veggie since the age of 14/15. I'm 20 now.

No diary products, no meat (obviously), no fish (obviously), no shoes/clothes made from animals and so on.
Very proud of myself and so is my boyfriend smile

It's pretty poor as far as jokes go...just basically saying vegans all think they're better than everyone else.

Kudos to you and anyone who are pure vegans. Seriously. That's true dedication. I love dairy so very much and I can't imagine not eating/drinking it anymore. I tried soy milk, and meh. I only like the vanilla stuff. Tofu is good once in awhile. In fact, my mom makes the most delicious tofu fajitas ever!

I'm vegan but don't drink soy milk or eat tofu (anymore). It's not totally necessary to eat tofu when you're vegan or vegetarian -- there are lots of other places to get protein. I generally don't like soy products because they're very processed. Occasionally I will cook with a little soy sauce though, and occasionally I'll have some edamame if I'm at a Japanese restaurant.

Let me EDIT: I'm a vegetarian who's lactose intolerant. I have walked the wild side with lactose free products rarely-but I mostly live vegan.

As a rule of thumb, if you want to eat healthy, just shop for food on the outside isles of the grocery store, and avoid going to the middle isles as much as possible.

Agreed. I generally avoid buying anything that comes in a box, can or jar. That way I know I'm getting fresher food, and I'm saving money as well.

I've been a vegetarian for eight years. I was vegan for a year and a half, and hopefully I'll get back into it someday.

That was about the only thing I could come up with...but just figured a joke published in a magazine as big as Esquire would be funnier than that.

I am a aspiring vegetarian, just having trouble figuring out what to eat. I fell back to eating meat a couple times last week but I tried to limit it.

Because Vegans can be pretty self righteous. *sigh*
I'm a vegetarian... and their propaganda irritates even me.

Most people don't understand that being a being vegan or vegetarian is not a diet, its a lifestyle.

Most "diets" don't last very long. And switching from vegan or vegetarian to meat can be quite a shock to the system and cause people to get ill. I cheated once three years ago and by that night I was in the hospital.

So I think pressuring people to change their lifestyle to match mine, is not my place to do. A vegan diet is hard to do, because, as I said, it’s a lifestyle. You have to be totally committed to it, and it requires a lot of discipline. Therefore, the "I'm better than you" attitude comes out. Trust me, every day I open Facebook, my update wall is filled with vegan dogma from my vegan friends. lol

So it is.

It's not that hard to figure out what to eat.

Make some rice. Stir-fry some broccoli to eat with it, and heat up some chickpeas.

I tried going on a strict vegatarian diet several years ago for about 3 months...and I have to admit that I felt better than I ever had in my life.

My problem with it is that I just find vegtables SO BORING!  The only way I could handle them was to always steam cook them (steam cooked corn on the cob - YUMMM!)...but I'm just too lazy to go to the trouble meal after meal.

Did you get recipe books, with all types of Asian, Indian and African recipes for cooking vegetables and beans?

Those foods are NOT boring.

I was a vegetarian for almost a year when I was about 18, but I didn't eat very healthily or keep an eye on my nutrient intake. I basically just kept my usual diet and took meat out of the equation. As a result, I felt tired, weak and my mood was weird all of the time. Then one day, I randomly had a burger and got back to being omnivore after that.

Currently, I'm attempting a transition from an average diet to mostly raw. I originally aimed to go 100% raw, but figured it would be unrealistic with my busy lifestyle. I don't find raw foodism  hard to stick to because of cravings for cooked food, it's the lack of options at times. Sadly, there aren't any organic grocery stores close to me which makes getting a wide variety of foods hard. Apples, oranges and lettuce only go so far!

I try to keep the cooked meals I do eat clean and simple though, sticking to chicken or fish with lots of whole veggies. I'm not a fan of red and processed meat anyway.

I feel great. My skin's glowing, I have more energy and I've lost a couple of kilos.

With an all vegatarian diet, you do have to make sure you get enough protein, but there are some simple non-meat combinations that you can get good protein from, like black beans and tortilla chips.

Vegetarian for the past ten years, with interest in pursuing a vegan lifestyle. Lately, I've replaced milk with soymilk or almond milk, but I've yet to come across any delicious vegan friendly replacements for cheese or ice-cream (two major weaknesses of mine)... Anyone have any suggestions?

At some point this year, I definitely want to try my hand at a mostly raw-food diet. smile
