McRib is Back. But Why Now?
Willy Staley's "A Conspiracy of Hogs: The McRib as Arbitrage," is a lyrical, insightful conspiracy theory about the appearance and disappearance of McDonalds's McRib sandwich. Staley argues that the McRib's appearance correlates with falls in the pork futures market, and represents a way for McD's to cash in on cheap pork, representing a kind of triumph of restaurant automation, logistical acumen, and financial engineering. In Staley's view, McDonald's is only secondarily a restaurant, and primarily conducts the business of a commodities brokerage. http://boingboing.net/2011/11/10/unders … -as-a.html Nov 13 11 12:52 pm Link people aren't having enough hear attacks. Nov 13 11 03:04 pm Link "When we keep the McRib on the menu, orders eventually start falling off." Bringing the McRib on and off the market is "the best way to deliver it in consistent high quality" under these conditions. "Another example of a product that McDonald's 'pulses' on and off the market is the Shamrock Shake." Straight from McDonald's Debra McDaniel, the Senior Director of U.S. Menu Management. It's not brain surgery. Supply and demand. If they keep it on the menu, it stops selling. Precisely the same reason Disney releases, and re-releases movies every seven to ten years. They end up selling more. Nov 13 11 03:07 pm Link McRibs remind me of those 'rib' patties that they used to serve in my school cafeteria. They aren't terrible tasting, but still ewwww. Mechanically separated and machined formed pork patties do not make me go running out of my home to the closet McD's. Suffice it to say, I do not understand the hold it has over some folks.
