Tim Little reviewed my port yesterday, and made some worthwhile suggestions. I would like to publicly acknowledge this, and thank him for his effort.
This was a Tag I left on his page:

Hello Tim,

I want to publicly thank you for taking the time and effort to review my portfolio.
The 2nd List Mentoring program is a great idea, a real asset to the MM community.
I appreciate you helping out a fellow photographer, and hope to be able to "pay it forward" in the near future.
I will definitely consider the suggestions and comments you made.

Cheers,

Dean

Hello everyone,

Can someone give me a portfolio assessment? I want to say thank you in advance. I wish there was a mentor in my area.

i'd really like someone who has the ability and time to offer some insight and suggestions to improve my overall experience with 1) the craft of shooting photos 2) the craft of processing photos, and 3) the strategy of promoting my craft.

first and foremost i am shooting photos because it please me. i don't do it primarily for economic reasons (obviously), however, after 20 years as an art director, i find that shooting photos is much less stressful and potentially more economically rewarding. a potentially good prospect for the future.

in terms of shooting models, well, this is where i am lacking the most experience. i REALLY want to shoot people. my scope of interest would be journalism, fine art and art nudes. i know, i know. doesn't everyone?

i believe if i can work with the right models i can learn how to capture and process some successful images. i actually had my first "legit" model shoot last week. a very kind 13 year old girl (daughter of a friend of mine), allowed me to shoot some photos for an hour or so, and while i consider this to have been a test, i feel a few of the images were relatively successful. UNTIL... until you dig deeper and then i can pick them apart.

i'm hoping to find someone, anywhere in the world, who is kind enough to help me hone my craft and learn to be (most) excellent at creating images.

i shoot almost exclusively using available light (although i used a reflector and fill flash with elsa's photos), Canon T1i and that is it. (well, i do shoot with an iPhone as well)

i use 95% Lightroom and 5% Photoshop to process. i do not just dump LR presets on my images, i take great care in processing photos as i believe this is a critical part of the craft.

i sort of look at it like this: subject, composition, and processing. the rest (camera, ISO, f-Stop, blah blah) is purely incidental and a means to an end.

i take great care trying to avoid creating images that are overly trendy in terms of look and feel. i try to minimize "over-processing" and like capturing some sort of feeling. heh. don't we all.

for me, the camera is just a way to capture what my eyeball sees.

thanks in advance to anyone willing to take me under their wing a bit. i can offer, in exchange, cake recipes (still reading?), marketing strategy, design etc if you'd like to consider a barter.

thanks!

-tristram

I would like and NEED an assessment. I don't feel that my portfolio "pops" and could definitely use the advice. My camera is OLD but it's all I have, I have next to no equipment so if there's something that you guys think I need I'm listening as well. I'm disabled and I want to pick this up(photography) as an extra source of income. Thanks for your time!

when the invitations to switch  over to the new list were sent out, the name changes were captured. The list should be current for names/location changes up until Mid-march.  Anyone who changed anything relevant after that date didn't get captured by myself or Craig. I still have the new banner for anyone who didn't get it yet.

I'd love for someone (or many people) to look through my port and help me with a direction. I have the opportunity to shoot again soon so I will be able to work towards a more cohesive port. I do not do this full time right now. it is just a hobby when I have free time. I hope to work up to a level where I could be making steady income from it.

looking for any advice...dont hold back. im not scared to get ripped apart...

Ill have a look tomorrow when I can put my contacts in. I'll PM some comments when I can get into fine details.  At the surface level, not much to rip so far.

Really sorry to hear that Steve. All the best from me and take what ever time you want. My review is not that urgent, especially compared to what your dealing with. Again my condolences to you, your family and niece.

Hi ESPhotos,

Since I'm somewhat near you relatively (next state over) and no one else has responded I'd be happy to give you an assessment. Expect a PM from me shortly.
