Peach,

You are so very kind with your comments and I am sincerely humbled.  I still have my own "issues" trying to select my avatars, thus I truly appreciate and respect your opinion.  I'll change it now based on your thoughts!

On a side note, I admire the fact that you are giving a bit of guidance and are not using the power of "critique" to not always look for something that is "wrong".  Before I asked for your opinion I also checked your work and felt that you were well qualified to render guidance to the rest of us without any self serving agenda.

Your own work is beautiful and I appreciate your comments.  That said, as for me and my work, I'm a babe in the woods compared to so many amazing photographers here within Model Mayhem.  I have a lonnnnng way to go!

Thanks again Peach and KUDOS for your most candid Avitar thoughts and the time you are putting in to guide us all! smile

Most Sincerely,

James

Thank you so very much for your kind words James, as I too am humbled. And I am not so sure you have a real "loooooong" way to go. I think you work is fabulous!

I like to help people, and even though I sometimes get "attacked" for wanting to help people, I do like doing it. This thread is just a very small way of offering up my opinion in an effort to help others in some small way.

Thanks again for your note. Now I am going to look at your port again in more detail, because it is very very good!!

Enjoy your day!

PJ

The table and wall behind the model offer a bit of clutter, but overall you have good lines and the strengths of the model stand out well.

Probably yes

Your eyes and face are gorgeous! The only setback with that photo is that it is horizontal instead of vertical, when is a better orientation for an MM avatar. If it was vertical I would say 90% yes.....but since it is horizontal it is less recognizable and might not catch my attention as much. In the horizontal I would say 60% yes

60%? I'll take it!

Thank you for the feedback smile

I am stuck on this question, is it? If not what is?

Ella,

If you have a moment, let me run by you "my" little list of what makes a good avatar:

there are avatars that will catch my eye when I post on another person's photo, thread or even on the main page, some avatar's will catch my eye. What makes those Avatar's stand out? Here is a short list:

1. bigger is usually better. Far away photos don't work on a small avatar. They have to grab my attention in about 1/4 of a second at most, and if my eye/brain has to figure out the avatar photo because you are too small in it or it is too busy, then it will not catch my eye

2. Colors.....bright colors catch my eye better. White (not so much a color but you get the idea) and red do the job the best. If you do a B/W then make sure that it really pops me in the face and says "HEY!! Look at me!!"  That is why I use the avatar that I use. It stands out. If the photo was smaller, it would not stand out. Do you agree?

3. Photos with curves and lines work very well. I will quantify this up front by saying I am a huge heterosexual. Just the way I am. We all have things about the opposite sex that really catch our attention. Look at the previous comments I have made......especially the ones that say " yes". There is something in the photo that sets the female apart.......legs, curves, behind, eyes, ........those catch my eye alot. And if you can highlight them, then I will more likely look at your port.......and maybe even list  or want to work with you if even possible.

4. Males. As I said before, I am a heterosexual. So you are already at a disadvantage if you are a male model. However, I will look more if you have a very creative avatar (because I like creativity no matter what your sex is), and I also enjoy beauty. Beauty can be male or female, but once again I inherently believe that females have more inherent beauty. Just the way I am.

On to your current avi......I like the photo. But if you are going to use a minimalism approach in your avatar you have to be sure whatever is showing has the power to draw people in to want to see more.  I have looked at yor port.  I like it.

So, IMO you have photos....at least 2 of them.... in your port that will do a much better job in grabbing that initial attention. that is the key......then draw the viewer in. Which photo(s) do you think would work best? I know which ones would work better in getting my attention, but lets see if you agree.

Thanks for asking Ella!!

Thank you very much that was nice and helpful.

Haha I get that, I am a giant dyke so I can appreciate the curves too. How does the new choice float your boat?

no

the subject does not stand out well and the shot is in the horizontal position....which also doesn't work well most of the time. IMO your have some fabulous artwork in your port. One of those would work well for you

Thanks for stopping by!
