Any Prince fans up in this MF ... damn!
Correct! The album was titled For You Released April 7, 1978 This is considered his first solo album. He contributed guitar tracks and helped co-write a song for 94 East but he wasn't successful and at the age of 17 left the band to record solo. He eventually made a demo with a company called Studio 80. Oct 11 12 09:11 am Link Imagesby Photography wrote: I could Prince nerd all day. Oct 11 12 09:38 am Link I'm not a huge Prince, Maxwell or MJ fan. Maxwell is too new for me (he hasn't grown on me yet) and most of Prince's songs were too weird for me (not to mention I don't really like screaming, especially from men). I can deal with MJ, especially the earlier stuff (Bad and before). As far as musical genius goes ... there are far too many to name, but Stevie Wonder is near the top of my list all the time. No contest. Singing wise, it's a draw. Prince vocal range is on that par and to some degree, more versatile. Overall, Prince is more versatile, BUT, MJ, like Prince can put on a show where even Prince will have to admit, MJ takes the show with a larger fan base. Michael was an interpreter of the highest fucking caliber. He could take ANYTHING and make it am emotionally laden universal piece of pop genius. "Thriller" was a song about going to see a movie.....essentially a novelty record and would have been a throwaway in lesser hands. "Heal The World" has lyrics so maudlin a greeting card writer would'be hung their head in shame. "Ben" was about a rat, for fuck's sake. But Michael would make it polished perfection always worthy of making you laugh cry or dance as he saw fit. Prince is a precocious eccentric who just happened to have some massive pop hits. His natural ability made him have to start pushing all of the boundaries and influences he hadaround and banging out new experiments( with varying degrees of success) just not to be bored. "Kiss" .....no bass. The god damn thing still packs a dance floor 30 years on AND HAS NO BASS AT ALL. NONE. "Purple Rain"......the album cut is over 7 minutes long with so many distinct musical sections and a near orchestral arrangement that it should have drowned in its own bombastic excess. It's all placed so precisely that by the beginning of the second verse you have your lighter up by default. "When Doves Cry" is one hell of a heavy set of lyrics with an army of multitracked Princes basically hurling accusations in your face, but you don't notice because of the masterpiece of minimalism backing track daring you not to dance. Prince is brilliant, but very difficult as most of what he did was so fucking technical and strange. Some of his best innovations are now R Oct 11 12 11:06 pm Link |
