Okay -- I admit:  I have a  hard time wrapping by brain around this entire situation.  Anyone got insights?

I have issues with the sanctions only because I'm tired of programs that get punished hurt people that had nothing to do with whatever it was that happened and those that are at fault are not punished.  However, it's also too easy then for programs to ignore things and claim innocence.

Do not attempt rewrite history.  The exception would be that if they are able to positively prove that cheating was occurring on the field of play that could affect the outcome of a game.  Otherwise, leave the records as they are.  Taking away wins, championships, etc is stupid and not only bad for the team being punished, but bad for the teams that played against them.  They are pretending like those games didn't happen.  Just leave it alone.

Punish the programs financially.  That's usually what gets the top brass in the biggest shit fit.  You take their money. And instead of preventing them from current/future championships, remove appropriate personnel/players and have a reduction of scholarships.  That way, existing players can still play for championships.  Imagine if someone at school or your work murdered someone and the school/company tried to hide it and as a result, every student/employee was sent to jail.  Stupid right?

The difference -- In SMU's case, the restrictions punished the team for stuff the team did.  In PSU's case, the team got punished for what some admins didn't do (and of course, for what one sicko did).  I don't have any problem with these admins (including the head coach) being punished, but the team & it's players did nothing wrong, and yet they are the ones being punished.
