There Will Be Blood (Robert Elswit)
2001 and Cabaret (Geoffrey Unsworth).
Any Kubrick movie from Paths of Glory onward.
Bruno Delbonnel's work for Amelie was gorgeous, too.

Oooh yeah, 2046 is a gorgeous looking film!

If you go the Kubrick route, don't miss Barry Lyndon.  I had that in my original response, but edited it out for some stupid reason.

For some reason, I haven't seen it, I should do a Kubrick cycle one of these days smile

Oh, it's *good*.   Prepare for 3 hours of historical drama and hilarity as Redmond Barry ascends the society's ladder and is laid low by his petty foibles!

Anything shot by:

Roger Deakins - works with the Coen Brothers,

And yes, 'Barry Lyndon' by Kubrick - several scenes shot exclusively with candlelight.

"Girl with a Pearl Earring"...Eduardo Serra
It's a "kind of" story of J.Vermeer...a painter in the classic dutch style of Rembrandt.
Serra lit nearly every scene in that Rembrandt style...really beautiful to watch...
The movie itself is about a B+ IMO but just gorgeous to watch!

Serra also shot 2 of the Harry Potter films,Blood Diamond and Unbreakable...
plus around 60+ other films!!!

I would add Chen Kaige's Life on a String, To Live and Farewell My Concubine

Akira Kurosowa -  Seven Samurai , Ran , Kagemusha , Yojimbo , The Hidden Fortress

Jacques Rivette- La Belle Noiseuse

Jean-Pierre Jaunet - A Very Long Engagement ( stars Audrey Tautou)

Claude Berri  - Manon des Sources ( the sequel to Jean de Florette and the one I prefer).

Patrice Leconte-  Girl on a bridge

Studio Ghibli  . Grave of the Fireflies

Mori Mozaki -  Barefoot Gen 1 and 2  one of the most moving films ever seen forgetting it is anime.

Pedro Almodovar -   Dark Habits , Tie Me Up -Tie Me Down , Volver, Woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown and Broken Embraces.

A lot of the films shot by Christopher Doyle are gorgeous to look at. He collaborated on most films by Wong Kar-wai. He did a terrific job on Last Life in the Universe by Pen-ek Ratanaruang which is a beautiful movie.

I love the look and moodiness of Michael Mann directed movies, in particular Miami Vice and Collateral (both filmed by Dion Beebe) and Heat and Manhunter (both filmed by Dante Spinotti).

I don't remember that film...But I do remember Schindler's List

It was done by Spielberg's Director of Photography....Janusz Kamiński

Spielberg and Kaminski...have a great relationship...they never discuss future projects. Kaminski has said in interviews..that Spielberg will call him about a couple of months he decides to shoot a film and says..it is about time to shoot a film. Kaminski says that they only discuss the project a few weeks out...and only on the set...they come up with multi ideas and set ups.

The Longest Day

Attack On Casino by British Forces.

This has got to be the most awesome 1.5 minutes of pure adrenalin of a cinematography

---No cuts, for over 1 minute and 20 seconds.
---No CGI, there wasn't one, when they made this.
---Pure choreographic brilliance or every actor and every extra.

Heaven's Gate     Beautifully filmed  but "so so" movie

Time Has Been Kind to ‘Heaven’s Gate’
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/23/movie … d=all&_r=0

"Mr. Cimino was candid about the psychic toll of “Heaven’s Gate.” “I’ve had enough rejection for 33 years,” he said. “I don’t need more. Being infamous is not fun. It becomes a weird kind of occupation in and of itself.”"

"Mr. Kristofferson, sounding more rueful than bitter, said that the reception to “Heaven’s Gate” knocked him off the Hollywood A-list for good. “I never really recovered from that,” he said, but he acknowledged that it was worse for Mr. Cimino. “It completely destroyed him.”"
