I think this is a great way to reply. Maybe with a couple of tweaks suggested, it's even better.

Maybe someone should sticky this thread, add it to the FAQ, etc.

Let them come back at you with questions about rates if they want to hire you.

This is a more successful response for me.

This is absolutely a case of bait-and-switch and -- based on what you state in this thread -- you designed it that way. It's not really a casting, so much as an availability notice to draw in interested photographers with the lure of TFP when you have pre-decided that you will only offer half or so of the photographers who contact you a trade shoot and must be paid by the other half or so, based on the number of shooting days you anticipate being available overall.

So if you already got a photographer for each of the ideas you had, why is the casting still up?

it is not mean, and it is professional.

however, some people find it tacky and bait and switch to respond with your rates, when the casting was for TF. So I would probably leave that out, and people who would still want to work with you will ask for rates themselves.

So I posted a casting recently and got half a million responses. I am really excited and got everything I needed from the casting. Mixed in with those amazing responses were a few... well they weren't what I'm looking for right now... I know that a lot of people on here say that no response is a response, but I am afraid to alienate people who might pay me in the future... so I decided to respond to everyone in as kind a way as possible to keep feelings from being hurt. Here is my response:

"Thank you very much for your interest. Unfortunately, I received so many responses to my casting call that all of my available spots for trade have been filled, and all of the ideas I wanted to shoot have been taken. I still do have some openings for paid shoots but I am booked until March.

I have a flat rate of [I quoted my hourly, half day, and full rate here].

This rate includes all the genres of photography that I shoot which means everything from fashion to artistic nude. I come fully prepared with hair, makeup, and wardrobe.

Let me know if you would like to set something up or have any questions!

Thank you again for your interest!"

I didn't offer crazy rates knowing that nobody in their right mind would pay them or anything like that, because I really would be willing to work with these folks if they paid, just not for trade.

Is my response nice enough? Is it wrong to offer them my rates when they obviously wanted to shoot trade? If you got this response from someone would you be angry?

Personally if someone sent that to me I don't think I would be upset. I might feel down that I didn't get the casting but it wouldn't hurt my feelings and feel like I would never work with that person.

Casting TFP then you counter PAID only. Bait and Switch much?

The fact that you still have the casting call up shows premeditated bait and switch.

Yes, that IS mean.

Just decline the shoot stating you've already filled what you wanted, thank them for their time, and say you'll keep them in mind for future concepts.

Let them know you like to hear their ideas for trade as well, if you like them enough to work with them.

If they want to work with you anyway, they'll ask for rates or ask how they can still work with you.

Never, ever, ever, send rates as an immediate response to a trade casting. You'll lose people that may have paid you otherwise, just by the insult of it.

I agree with many of the folks above, in that your message unintentionally says, "I've selected someone else for my TF* project, but I'll work with you if you pay me."

It's often best just to not saying anything and to do so is professional.  (In many professional casting calls it is routine to not saying anything rather than the insincere stock response of "we'll keep you on file for consideration in other projects.")  Most will just assume you picked someone else and that's generally okay.

You probably would have been better off to simply stop w/ the above.

If they were interested in hearing your rates when (it sounds like) they were seeking a trade shoot, they would have followed up & asked for them.

You are responding to your denied job applicants with a price list for your services and you think that that makes sense? Really think about that one for a moment.

Let's see. If you saw an ad for a Black Friday sale for a free camera and you stood in line for hours only to have the cashier tell you that they don't have any more of them for free, but you could buy one for $500, would you feel cheated and manipulated?

Would it matter how professionally or pleasantly the cashier worded the response?

I said that I had all of my dates filled for TF until March and all of my ideas were taken. If the photographers that I sent that message to had wanted to schedule in March or April for TF, then it would have been another matter. As for the casting still being up, I thought that the time had to expire on the casting before it would disappear from the casting calls list. I will check and see if I can take it down though since I do have all my spots filled now.

I'm sorry but I thought that the casting call had to expire before it would come off the casting calls list. I did not know they could be deleted and I am on my way to deleting right now. Now that I realize how this looks I will be sure not to let it happen again.

This much is excellent. However, to me, the rest would make it look like there was no TF on offer and you were only trawling for work.

If I replied to your TF casting and wasn't successful but wanted to work with you anyway, I'd ask for your rates.

Completely agree with this.

Similarly, I would imagine the model wouldn't appreciate photographers responding to her TF casting call with their own rates.

Seems nice to even respond to all; hardly ever happens.
