This is getting ridiculous.   Stacie halas was a science teacher, then the people in charge found out she had an 8 month career in porn in order to make some money during a financially difficult time.  The porn industry is legal, it doesn't hurt anybody excelpt possibly the actors, she didn't rob a bank, she didn't kill anybody or rob anybody.  She had sex on film.  Evidently, those that were involved in getting her fired have lived a godly life.  Maybe they should go back to religion in schools so they would remember that Christ said to the crowd who were going to stone Mary Magdalen that he without since shall cast the first stone.  Evidently their were many in Oxnard that have lived a sinless life.  She wasn't fired because she wasn't a good teacher.  Also, teachers that go on strike do hurt others.  They hurt the students who can't go to school during the strike.  Maybe they should all be fired.

I was thinking "this, again?", but then I saw that Stacie Halas, California Teacher Fired For Porn Star Past, Loses Appeal. hmm

This part made me lol

Student claims that the teacher was moonlighting as a porn star were initially dismissed after school officials said they couldn't find any images of her on the Internet – but they were using the school's computers, which don't allow access to porn.

On some level I understand where the school's side is coming from. Schools want good reputations so students will choose their school over other options and it's also part of the parents' decision and I know a lot of parents would not be okay with a woman who did porn teaching their kids. I know my mom would never've liked that very but. But on the other hand, it is unfair as it's the past and they have to understand that some people will do whatever it takes to make money just to put them in the direction they really want to go. I personally don't have a problem with people who do porn and I could care less what my teachers' pasts were like. I don't agree with how they handled that but if I was the teacher, I wouldn't wanna work there anyway if they aren't gonna treat her like the other employees.

Should not happen.  Our puritanical society strikes again.

Suppose I am morally against alcohol.  If I found out my child's teacher used and sold alcohol (in a legal manner) could I insist they be fired?

I think it's because all of the parents are trying to convince their kids that they've never engaged in such a vile and disgusting act.

Meanwhile, the Dads are probably looking for their missing DVDs so Junior doesn't find the one with his teacher in it.

The court said
""Although her pornography career has concluded, the ongoing availability of her pornographic materials on the Internet will continue to impede her from being an effective teacher and respected colleague," Cabos-Owen said in the 46-page decision issued Friday by the Commission on Professional Competence"

Sounds reasonable and logical. The decisions we make have consequences, some quite long lasting, and they may not seem fair but they are real non the less.

lame. the school district, not the teacher. it's one thing to fire people for doing things  that are illegal (i bet some of those administrators smoke pot) but for something that is legal? this one should go to the supreme court.

Whether you, me, or someone else thinks the situation is fair or unfair, she should have, reasonably, known the impact of her choices on her future career.

We all get judged, on many levels, for the things we have done in the past. Good and bad ... our actions follow us.

So, while many will focus on whether the work she did, and its impact, are fair or unfair, the real concern is: she knew what she was doing, she knew the potential impact, and she did it anyway.

Sorry to go against all the edgy hip enlightened group-think here.

Right, wrong or indifferent you can't be a public school teacher and have pornographic images of yourself out there.

You know how kids in school are.

The school would be out of control.

Look up Carol Shaya. she did not break any rules but they drover her out because of a ll the shit it was causing on the street. Other women cops wanted her out because of all the catcalls.

She could have done other things to make money. Porn is not the only way to earn cash.

There is also cutting back expsenses.

This is not a moral judgement. It simply is what it is.

She can get a job at the university level. She can get a research job. She could be a third world science teacher. However, she can never ever ever be a public school teacher again.

Sorry 'bout that.

No need to wait for reincarnation, there are no fences or guards to keep you in. People from all over the world vote with their feet, many come here. Personally anyplace Sean Penn is a place I would avoid. Never been to Oregon or Hati but think I would prefer Oregon myself. Think more people die leaving Hati than trying to get in.

You can't really hop in the internet and show that you child's math teacher was watching porn in the comfort of his home last night though. So yeah, watching it is fine... because unless the teacher is an idiot, his or her students will never know that they were doing it.

I wonder how many of those who were involved in firing her watches porn themselves..

I don't believe anyone should get fired for anything that doesn't effect their job performance.

There may be other ways to make money but when you need money fast and in a decent amount, porn can be an option. Someone can make three grand a week just by masturbating online. Bam. There's your schooling paid for. And young people do have a tendency to make mistakes. They shouldn't be fired over it.

Mary Magdalene was never in danger of being stoned.  You're thinking of the adulteress in the book of John.

well, how can you be so sure it wouldn't effect the job performance? I mean, not her performance itself, I certainly don't think less of her as a person because of this. But I can imagine it must be hard to maintain your position as a figure of authority when you're in front of a class of kids who know about your pornpast and have most likely seen you naked, or will
(I mean, once they know... they're going to look for it, no doubt about it...)

It still doesn't explain how the students discovered her porn career. Were they viewing porn and recognized their teacher?

That is true, and I see the point.  But at the same time I believe we should make sure that kids respect anyone who runs their classroom.  If we let that fact allow teachers or whoever to be fired we are sending the message that it's okay to not have respect for someone who did nothing wrong to you...

I also disagree that they will definitely find them if no one points it out.  If someone uses a stage name...you have to search through thousands of women to find that person.  I know it happens, but I wonder how many people have done things like that and no one really knows...

I am drawing a mental picture here of the teacher wearing a really nice lacy bra, and having her blouse unbuttoned "just so," occasionally leaning over her desk to make a lesson point. She would have the little bastards' rapt attention all right!

Noooooo problem!

If you've ever been to Oxnard, you'll see that the least of their worries is what a teacher does as her side job.

I've been following this in the local news when it first came out a while back and just laughed... There's nothing conservative about that armpit town.

in regards to that last paragraph, I meant "now that people already know, they will keep finding it". that's not something that goes away after a year or 2. if she stays as a teacher, students 10 years from now will still find their way to that video, cause others will keep telling them. it's just such a fun fact about your teacher...

I tend to agree with your first paragraph, but that's not something that can change overnight, it's a change in attitude. but they need to get the debate going...

does anyone think it depends on the type of work she did?

I remember like a year ago there was a similar thing that happened (teacher getting fired after school discovered she had a career in porn). But the teacher was a biology teacher, and one fo the scenes she did was changing between anal and vaginal, and then they guy came in her ass and she ehm "scooped out" the semen and ate it. I can imagine it's not easy to be taken seriously as a teacher after that, even if you really try...

This is soooooo typically an American "thing" - - - guns and violence = good; anything to do with sex = BAD!!!

I believe it's a big deal because people are making it a big deal.  It's the first shock of finding out, but after awhile it'd be like...oh big deal.

If someone illegally hooked up video tapes in someones house and was recording a woman having sex with her husband and they broadcast it all over the net...should this woman be fired if she's a teacher because kids can see these videos?

I remember one time at a place I worked at a girl had a partial birth abortion...I think she was nearly 6 months along...these abortions are...well anyways it went around work and a lot of people were having a hard time respecting her after that.  No one wanted to listen to her and anyone and everyone knew about something she told a woman there who was supposed to be a friend.

So anyways one day the owner of the company came out and said that people's personal choices don't mean that they aren't suited to be a boss there...and that anyone who can't respect their bosses or was talking about someone's personal business (and we knew who he meant)...would be the ones to go.

You better believe after that we all stfu.  I can see where this was different but the point is once the boss put his foot down...it made a difference.  The fact that people are going out of their way to bring up someone on the net from this woman's past and no one really knows why she had to do what she did...and we look down on her?  That needs to change IMO because it was nobody's fucking business to begin with.
