...I just upgraded my PC's RAM from 16 GB to 32 GB...

And now - finally - Photoshop operates virtually without ANY delays at all...

I remember what that was like.

You frickin' can't imagine what it's like to know that your PC contains more RAM than 98% of the ENTIRE free world...

Congratulations!  I just got CS2 - in particular Adobe RAW - to work on my wife's win 7 machine after messing with it (more off than on) for the last 6 months.

Not quite happiness on your scale but we all have our little victories...

For those of you who have never experienced the NIRVANA that I have...32 GB of memory is NOTICEABLY HEAVIER than mere mortal amounts of memory (I'm not kidding when I say I almost got a hernia from just LIFTING the 32 GB upgrade kit!).

32... Big freakin' deal. I have 512.

Oh, I see mine is 'mb' and yours is 'gb.'

Does that matter?

Also, you may want to watch how much you post about this. Models will see it and ask you to work tf* with them since image editing will take you hardly any time at all...

...you wouldn't believe it...it's like my PC can read my intentions.  It now adds layers (even selects the layer mode) before I even know what I want to do myself...

Funny you should mention that phrase. I knew and worked with Jason Miller (Father Karras) and he may be guiding you from the other side... or maybe it's me... you never know.....

You think you're being clever...but I had to have an electrician come out and install some 440VAC 3-PHASE outlets to handle the incredibly massive RAM I now have installed on my momumental PC...

Oh Hell!  Now there's a sink-hole 60 feet wide in my backyard and I'm pretty damn sure it was caused by the INCREDIBLE POWER of my THIRTY-TWO GIGA-A-FRICKIN'-BYTES of RAM!!!!!

I have 8GB and have done 3D work with it, honestly unless your printing jobs are defined in acres, meh. I'd rather have a screaming GFX card at this point. Let me know when you get dual Tesla blades wink

Current setup:

Windows 7 Ultimate (with Win 8 Pro set up as dual boot)

Primary hard drive: Crucial M4 256 GB SSD

Additional hard drives: Toshiba 1 TB and WD 1 TB

RAM: G. Skill Ripjaws 32GB 1600GHZ (4 X 8 GB)

Power Supply: PCPower MKIII 600 Watts

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3

CPU: AMD Phemon II X4 975 3.6GHZ Black Edition (quad processor)

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GT430 (1 GB resident memory)

Computer case: Corsair 400R (and I added 4 120mm case fans...so with the 3 120mm fans included with the case, plus self-contained fans for power supply, CPU and video board...there is a total of 10 fans - this setup regularly uses more than 250 watts)

Plus DVD burner, BD player, Firewire PCI card, USB 3.0 PCI Express card, and Multi-Card Reader...and everything is plugged into a very large capacity APC UPC.

It started out as a HP desktop PC...but I have upgraded/replaced every piece of it (including mouse, keyboard and OS) so that it no longer contains anything from the original.

[I also have 3  1 TB external hard drives for backup.]

This is not "your father's PC"...it has some power...

I feel as though you are obsessing over the RAM when it's the SSD and cpu giving you the speed. The RAM will allow bigger things to be opened, and yes some speed based on the kind of RAM. Also your gfx card is lame, but does Adobe support OpenCL or Cuda these days?

I started out with a 2.8 GHZ dual core processor, 8 GB of 1066MHZ RAM, a single 750GB hard drive, no video card, Windows 7 Home Premium and a really cheap power supply.

I upgraded one item at a time (including going through 2 RAM upgrades - 8 to 16, then 16 to 32)...and saw some speed increase with each upgrade (I even saw an increase in speed with I added the 2 extra hard drives, creating separate scratch disks on both of them).  I was actually very surprised to see the difference I saw with my last upgrade: 16 to 32 GB RAM...I didn't expect to see much if any speed difference, but it was actually one of the bigger jumps in speed I saw (or really mostly a lack of hesitations/delays).

I was very methodical with my upgrades and I know what I got from each one.  The speed increase I got from installing the SSD (which was the last upgrade I made before going from 16 to 32 GB RAM) was one of the bigger speed increases, as was the upgrade from 2.8 GHZ dual core CPU to 3.6 GHZ quad core CPU).

Upgrading the video card (again) will probably be my last upgrade, as anything else will get too expensive for the difference (the only thing left I can really do is replace the motherboard and CPU - again - which would not give me much bang for the buck).

I'm probably going to do some overclocking with my present CPU as I've seen a lot of positive data on how much the AMD Phemon II X4 975 3.6GHZ Black Edition CPU can be overclocked.

[Upgrading the power supply did not give me any speed increase of course, but it did give me fewer blue screens...and put me in a better position for future overclocking of the CPU, as the particular PSU I have now has very tight tolerances with its voltage outputs.]

...And as far as the "obsessing"...it was all meant to be "tongue in cheek" (just trying to have a little fun and entertain the troops), especially since 32GB is a really "vulgar" amount of RAM!  smile

Nah, if you want to see vulgar computer nerdery hang out at a 3D forum wink That's where hardware is really getting pushed. Shit, they are more concerned about what is coming out next than what is available now tongue
