I agree.  Ultimately it was his decision.  He, and his marketing team, have been successful in garnering popular opinion using the resources available to them.  IMO, this was another example.  While I generally applaud their efforts I feel like using a pop star to represent our country in the National Anthem at the Presidential Inauguration was not the right choice.  Ultimately I don't think it will have any real lasting consequences.

It's his party. I would think he gets to choose who performs at a party celebrating his inauguration.

I doubt it has anything to do with his marketing team.  Shawn and Beyonce have been at events with him in the past.  They were at the last inauguration.  They've been at other events of his.    Obama doesn't need to campaign for anything anymore, so there is no real need for "popular support." 

He just likes her.  He wanted her to sing at the inauguration.  He called them.  She said yes.

Yes he isn't campaigning anymore.  However that doesn't mean they don't need to be concerned with how they are perceived.

I'm a fan on Snoop (circa the 90's) however I certainly wouldn't want to see him representing our country at a state affair.
