What is the point of fishing for the DDs if one is only going to bet a grand?
Those who are all over the board searching for the DD's annoy the hell out of my wife and I.
Also that dude was one of those who looked mad when Alex told him that he had the wrong answer. Those people also annoy us.
And finally he was one who got smirky when he answered correctly. Another annoying thing.
He was all the annoying things one can be on Jeopardy all wrapped into one.
I do like the dude who has won a few games recently. He will be back after the teen tournament and the tournament of champions.
However my wife and I will agree, the annoying ones always seem to last longer than the cool ones.

Jeopardy! is a game of skill (ringing in), knowledge and strategy. Finding the DD, even in a category that is not your strength keeps other players from benefiting from them.

The popularity and longevity of the show reiterate this rather obvious fact.
Granted, certain superficial and trivial TV-friendly personality traits *are* optional. But again, merely showcasing personable folks is NOT the purpose of the broadcast.

Some of the questions are pure trivia. Some reflect a broader knowledge of subjects such as science, history, literature, etc. Some require particular adeptness with language (such as Before & After). It's generally a fast paced game and the producers don't want to slow it down with a lot of silliness.
You seem to mistake loud, wild gesticulations for "genuine characteristics." The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune may be more your style. Those shows select contestants based mainly on their ability to jump and clap.

Alex shaved his mustache because it was turning white and reminding him of how old he was getting.

Ok, well consider celebrity Jeapardy. If we are talking about intelligence have you noticed that those that are known to have high IQs are easily enough beaten by other celebrities that aren't as well known for their intelligence? Dr. Oz didn't do particularly well, even on the medical questions. I'd like to think he is smart. lol. I think Cheech Marin does in fact have a very high IQ, but didn't play well on the show.

I tried out for Jeopardy several years ago. Met a ton of fun and fascinating people in line (I got there before dawn and was tenth in a line that made Space Mountain look like a supermarket express checkout).
I made it to the second day of testing, which included a fairly rapid-fire written test structured so you couldn't go back and complete answers to previous questions. To my left was a university physics professor; he was well travelled and I figured he'd kill.
Amid questions about atomic bonds, Slavic politics, Renaissance history, and Trig, we got a question about which popular singer had dated Jennifer Aniston (who is John Mayer?). Then more stuff about science, history, politics, psychology, movies...
As soon as the proctor (one of the travelling Jeopardy clue crew) blew the whistle and ordered all pencils down, the physics prof pushed himself away from the table and yelled, "WHO THE HELL IS THIS JENNIFER ANISTON PERSON?!?" The whole room burst into laughter. The person on his other side looked over at me and said, "Welp, there's ONE he got wrong."
Nope, no ivory tower stereotypes reinforced that day...

The thing about Ken Jennings is that he "lost" on a final jeopardy answer that I got. It was something about this place being the largest employer of seasonal help. The correct question was what is H&R Block? The woman who won was oh so shocked! I don't think she lasted past the next show.

You only get to play again after losing if you keep going for at least 5 days. It's pretty common that someone is playing for a week or more only to lose by a lot or little to one person who in their next game gets crushed. I think luck can have a lot to do with it. You can't always expect to get topics that you yourself are an expert in. Some people luck out on particular programs.
