Hey everyone!

Just sharing a video I made for a retouching competition on Facebook by which i analysed the submissions for the competition and also show my result and approach via in-depth walk through

Everything is based on personal taste, so i don't expect everyone to agree with my thoughts, however i am open to hearing what everyone has to say.

of course i did the video for marketing purposes as well so no need to make mention tongue

excuse my accent and poor narrative skills x_x

On the first video the phrase "I was not going to d&b the whole thing because it's not paid work" sprang out at me. On the final image, I would venture that you have gone too far with the inverted high pass/bandstop, the final image shows too much homogeneity.

I would be tempted to leave this video out of the collection, as most of it is taken up by you explaining the competition on Facebook etc. and perhaps is not the best marketing tool or representative of your skills.

I haven't checked the other tutorials, but the images look more promising.

You do good work. I'm glad you have posted videos. Not everyone is willing to do such a thing, or they are and don't post them publicly. (like me ;p )

Your workflow is so much different than mine. I think that's a neat thing though.
The biggest difference...you use a massive amount of layers.

HOLY.
LAYERS.

You asked for feedback at the end of the very first video you posted, so I’m going to give you some. Moderators… check around the 28:18 mark.

You spent the first twelve minutes of the video bad mouthing the work of the people that finished ahead of you in the contest.

A number of times you mentioned the original photography was terrible. At one point you added the comment that it was so terrible, you felt your effort was less than stellar, but was not your fault.

It seemed like you may not have rehearsed beforehand, because your delivery was stilted and very choppy. You were very obviously searching for explanations as you went along, which created a lot of pregnant pauses. It almost seemed as if you didn’t understand what you were trying to say.

I couldn’t keep up with the count of how many times you said it wasn’t your best work because you weren’t getting paid. You also mentioned had it been paid work, you would have done things differently.

I suggest that if you are going to produce more tutorial videos, you rehearse them before hand, eliminate negative comments regarding the work of others, and quit deflecting blame away from yourself, when clearly you are the one doing the work. If you actually are using these videos to secure new clients, you might consider taking them down until you resolve some of the issues I mentioned.

Why not? its a technique and it can be used.... don't tell me not to if it looks good..

You retouchers are so caught up with 'rules' and forget that there are artistic decisions to be made as well... fine, "dont do it on the entire image" (which I didnt) or "dont use one radius" (which I also didnt) but dont tell me not to use the technique especially when I used it in a sensible way. When the situation presents itself use whatever tools or technique required to create your desired result.

Shocking you didn't also mention not to use gaussian blur on the skin as well.
Which in fact if you watched the entire video you would notice that I did. However I didnt use it as a skin smoothing effect but rather to create a sense of depth... wink

I'm going to guess it was in reference to the highlighted areas here, where I'm also guessing he hadn't thought that you wanted a fingerprint-esque pattern added to the edge of the hand.

When going for an unusual effect, it's useful to tell people so they don't think it's a mistake.

Totally agree!! I would also like to add that you shouldn't work harder on just paid jobs... free jobs still represent you and trust me if your test is good this will become paid jobs in the near future.

You need to learn to be a bit more humble and take criticism!! Sometimes is good take on board what other people say about your work. :-)

I am very humble and always open to criticism smile however I dislike that people say not to use a specific technique... that is not critisizing my work but rather placing rules on what you're allowed to do in photoshop. If you want to critique the image say something like "maybe tone down the technique" OR "maybe it wasn't necessary for the specific image" OR "maybe it needed more" Or "maybe you could have cloned a bit more."

With that said I believe that all the tools can be used for retouching in one way or the other, it has its pros and cons and its do's and dont's... Remember even skin cloning and/or healing can be taken too far if its not used right wink

Best

I agree but the image wasn't a test or trade but rather for a friendly competition...

Yes, but this still represents you!! Other potential clients can see your attitude towards competitions/free jobs/test and might put them off.. just a bit of advice :-)

I wasnt going to comment until I watched as the thread devolved into the OP blaming and attacking comments and commentators all while disregarding constructive criticism.

You put your stuff up here for criticism. Not taking that criticism when asking for it is simply silly. Even if you disagree with what people are saying, you accept their feedback because YOU ASKED. Then if it is absolutely wrong or you feel the need to comment back or address their statement. Dont attack them, instead explain WHY you dont do that or simply say I have never done that, thanks for the ideas. Stay positive....

and my criticism of your work, is that you have a halo around a lot of your lips. If I were you I would fix those hard lines that look like mistakes.

I'm not critiquing your work, I'm critiquing your video, which you asked us to do. I turned it off after 2:30 because all you did during that period was turn before and after layers on and off and said how much red you put into a conversion of the raw file. for two minutes and 30 seconds, you wasted my time and lost my interest.

I'm not telling you this to make you angry, or to humiliate you. you seem determined to continue with these videos, and I hate to see you put all of that work into an enterprise that's doomed to fail because you can't properly script your videos. Kudos to you for talking faster and admitting your videos are tedious, but I strongly suggest you script them better and rehearse more before you commit them to the web. If you go into that video and count, you'll see you repeated yourself ad nauseam for the first two minutes.

Best of luck to you.
