Not since the Joe Theismann incident a couple decades ago have I seen an injury this gruesome! Players were visibly sickened by it. Watch but only if you have a strong stomach.

Theismann never stepped on a field to play again after he got hurt but with the advancement in modern medicine I hope this kid has a better fate.

That's a hard one to watch!  I suffered a broken leg that was bad ... not quite that bad, but both bones broken in my right leg just last year.  Similar to that, I broke my leg coming down hard while sprinting downhill.  They put a rod in my leg, but I don't know what the surgery will be for that guy!  Doubt he'll be able to return to playing ball like he used to.  I'm able to walk, but still recovering.  It sucks, and I doubt I'll ever be running like I used to ever again.

It's hard to say.  He certainly has his young age in his favor.  They can put titanium rods in which help stabilize the injury, but bones still have to heal.  Man it hurt!!!!   I've been through some painful stuff, but breaking my leg was the most painful!   I feel for the guy!

I tuned in just after the incident, so, missed it, but I saw the aftermath...players crying.  The halftime show is on now, and they're talking about it, but haven't replayed the actual accident.  NSFW, I guess.

When I saw the incident in the video clip in the OP, I said, "Damn, legs ain't supposed to bend that way..."

Worse than I expected, even worse than Shawn Livingstons injury.  Dunno if he'd play basketball again, but with the advances in medicine hopefully he can fully recover quickly.

That was the worst injury I've ever seen even worse than Theisman's broken leg. I read that players on the bench were puking after hearing it and seeing it.

I wish him a speedy recovery.

Several players were too nauseated to even get off the court, they just sat or layed down in shock. Hell I felt queasy just watching it on TV. Ugggg.....

And yet it didn't look like anything happened that could cause a leg to just break.  He leaped up, came down on the leg, and it broke.  That almost never happens.

This had happened to Sam Bowie of the Portland Trailblazers. Also with another football lineman from Cleveland or Cincinnati, his name is Crumwell or Crum...something. I think there was also another time with a UCLA wide receiver? Or he was an UCLA receiver.

The bones have become weak or stressed. It happened to Wayman Tisdale when he was at home. Though he said he didn't feel any pain. The bones were just totally rotted away, the nerve and everything around there is dead. Tisdale later died because of that disease, I think?

I've seen and heard bones break in real life. It's more gruesome to talk and think about it - or to see it later on tape. At the time, you jump in and do what you have to do (i.e., immobilize the victim, up through the joint above the break, and call in the professionals). But having gone through that, I don't wish to see it happen in replay.

Gerald Wilhite of the Broncos had a bad one, I think on Monday night football. When they replayed it to see why he was being carried off the field, his planted foot had gotten twisted completely in reverse from his leg. I thought Dierdorf was going to lose his dinner.

I agree I think it was the most gruesome I've seen. The reaction of the bench says it all.  I heard that supposedly the bone was sticking out, and showing.  Blehhhhh.

Patrick Wahlberg, sorry to hear about that.  Hope your recovery is well.  Fortunately I never broke a bone.  My brother broke an arm twice I think, seemed like it hurt. I saw it happen one time, not sure about the other.

Jason Kendall (Pirates) & Moises Alou (Expos) had some rather disgusting ones too.  I think Jason stepped onto first funny while running out a grounder & broke his ankle 90 degrees.  Moises was rounding first to second when he stepped funny & also broke his ankle 90 degrees.  I remember the camera zoomed in on him to see why he didn't continue to second, he was sitting there, helpless, with his foot twisted 90 degrees the wrong way. The vids might be on youtube somewhere.

It happened to me!  If you missed my post on here, I'll go into more detail.  April 21st I was running hard and fast with my friends dog going down hill on pavement.   I got to the dirt, and a sharp decline of a few inches which I sort of leaped down on landing on my right leg.  I heard AND felt it snap ... twice!  yikes  I didn't fall forward, amazingly, I sat down backward clutching my leg screaming, almost like what happen to the ball player in the basketball game.

Fortunately for me, there were people driving by and two of them happened to be off duty EMT's with cellphones.  Both bones were broken, but not directly across .. as in the smaller one was lower, and the bigger bone had a break up higher in my leg.  I was taken in for surgery, and another fortunate thing for me was that the orthopedic surgeon was a good one!  I'm still in the recovery process though.  I'm not sure I want to try running again even though I'm back to walking nearly teh same distance I used to before the break.  It takes time!

Thanks!  About the 90 degree ankle break ... I know of a long jumper for Stanford U. who was a contender for the Olympics until she did just that.  Stanford Medical School and Hospital is one of the best in the Nation.

Here it is!  I even commented on the video'  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuVzxVb5sc0  Erica Mclain is an elite athlete!  I wrote this; "You are inspirational! I'm not an Olympic athlete like you, but I enjoy working out and staying in shape. I do long distance walking with some sprinting, but I am not a distance runner. So on April 21, 2012, just two months ago, I was running fast down a trail in the hills. I took a giant leap coming down hard on my right leg, breaking my tibia and fibula! The surgery went well, so 2 months later, I'm walking again! Another 4 or 5 months before I get back to walking the distance I did before."

When I say I was walking again at 2 months, that just means I no longer was using a walker, crutch or cane, not doing a whole lot of walking!  lol   In recovery, I push myself physically.  I don't like to be sick or injured ... but then does anyone?   Believe me ... there are mornings when I wake up aching from my past injuries.  Even this morning.  I'm not looking forward to getting older ... so I'll just keep on trucking through it all!  wink

Napoleon McCallum, RB for the 1994 L.A. Raiders, suffered a horrific knee injury that ended his career. He got bent in a way that his knee did about a 90-degree bend the wrong way. It got disjointed like ripping apart a chicken wing. Almost had to have the leg amputated.

Ware didn't land stiff-legged or in any way that would suggest the lower leg was in any unusual stress. Weird.

Ugggh, disgusting.  Eagles FB Leonard Weaver had a pretty tragic injury which severed not only his ACL, but his nerves affecting his foot motion.  It became not just a career ending but possibly an ability to walk ending injury.

after reading about it, there's no way i could watch it. i was going to be watching the game too, and now i'm glad i didn't. if i had seen that, i would have probably passed out.

the theismann injury was gruesome, and i hear this one was even far worse.

poor kid, i hope he can at least walk again without too much pain.

I started tearing up a bit for the kid when I saw it. That's surgery, months in a cast, and a year of rehab at least. Yeowch.

Prognosis is for about a year rehab and a full recovery.  The injury is the same that Michael Bush had and he was full strength and running well for the Chicago Bears last year.

They took Ware into surgery immediately because of the risk of infection since the bone was exposed, they're saying he'll be moved back to Louisville Tuesday.

I damn near tossed my cookies when I first saw it, which was in 60 inches of hi def and not from the web. My wife walked in just as the replays were being shown and she had to leave the room....it was that bad.

They're talking a year of rehab after the surgery and I hope the kid can make a complete recovery...time will tell.

I talked to Kevin Ware's cousin this morning.  Kevin is okay and in pretty good spirits all things considered but his mom was upset about all the coverage and how the video is everywhere...but it has been explained to her that it is NEWS etc...so she understands but is still bothered by it like any mother would be.  Here's to hoping he sees a full recovery and is back next season.

Yeah, I've heard about it -- I tuned into the game about 30 seconds after it happened, with the guy lying on the floor screaming.  I muted the TV.  I don't need to see it.

When I first lived in Portland, decades ago, there was a little park just a 5 minute walk away.  Bill Walton hanged out there, often recovering from foot/leg injuries, sometimes playing pickup games -- players would come from all over the Pacific Northwest to play those pickup games.

Nowadays, it's probably not common knowledge, but Walton can barely walk.

Sometimes, extra large / tall people have hidden medical difficulties.  Many of them suffer sooner or later.  I'm not offering any kind of medical diagnosis on the guy, and I hope he recovers well, but I gotta say that I'm surprised that things like this don't happen more often.

(From the reports I heard, Ware was just making a normal play; Theisman's leg injury had some help from Lawrence Taylor).

Before the injury Bush was a slam-dunk first-round draft pick, but the Raiders drafted him in the middle rounds as a project, fully knowing he'd be out his first year. He played well for Oakland for a few years before going to Chicago via free agency. He was at full strength by the time he suited up for the Raiders in year two of his contract. Never showed any effects of the break.

But I did cringe every time he broke a long run and got caught from behind. I always half-expected that leg to go again.

Back when I was in high school, torn knee cartilage meant a foot-long zipper scar and six months in a full-length leg cast. Now it's an inch-long scar and sometimes as little as a few weeks of rest.

Gotta say, I heard about it on the morning news & 1st thing I did was go looking for a really good shot of his leg. I do SFX makeup for emergency training exercises & thought it would be a great way to see some of the details I wanted to know. Of course, everyone has been very circumspect & only fuzzy, no-details kinds of shots seem to be available. Shucks!
On the other hand, kinda cool that people decided it would be in poor taste to post the bad ones!
