It's hard to say.  He certainly has his young age in his favor.  They can put titanium rods in which help stabilize the injury, but bones still have to heal.  Man it hurt!!!!   I've been through some painful stuff, but breaking my leg was the most painful!   I feel for the guy!

Several players were too nauseated to even get off the court, they just sat or layed down in shock. Hell I felt queasy just watching it on TV. Ugggg.....

The bones have become weak or stressed. It happened to Wayman Tisdale when he was at home. Though he said he didn't feel any pain. The bones were just totally rotted away, the nerve and everything around there is dead. Tisdale later died because of that disease, I think?

It happened to me!  If you missed my post on here, I'll go into more detail.  April 21st I was running hard and fast with my friends dog going down hill on pavement.   I got to the dirt, and a sharp decline of a few inches which I sort of leaped down on landing on my right leg.  I heard AND felt it snap ... twice!    I didn't fall forward, amazingly, I sat down backward clutching my leg screaming, almost like what happen to the ball player in the basketball game.   

Fortunately for me, there were people driving by and two of them happened to be off duty EMT's with cellphones.  Both bones were broken, but not directly across .. as in the smaller one was lower, and the bigger bone had a break up higher in my leg.  I was taken in for surgery, and another fortunate thing for me was that the orthopedic surgeon was a good one!  I'm still in the recovery process though.  I'm not sure I want to try running again even though I'm back to walking nearly teh same distance I used to before the break.  It takes time!

Patrick Wahlberg, sorry to hear about that.  Hope your recovery is well.  Fortunately I never broke a bone.  My brother broke an arm twice I think, seemed like it hurt. I saw it happen one time, not sure about the other.

Jason Kendall (Pirates) & Moises Alou (Expos) had some rather disgusting ones too.  I think Jason stepped onto first funny while running out a grounder & broke his ankle 90 degrees.  Moises was rounding first to second when he stepped funny & also broke his ankle 90 degrees.  I remember the camera zoomed in on him to see why he didn't continue to second, he was sitting there, helpless, with his foot twisted 90 degrees the wrong way. The vids might be on youtube somewhere.

Thanks!  About the 90 degree ankle break ... I know of a long jumper for Stanford U. who was a contender for the Olympics until she did just that.  Stanford Medical School and Hospital is one of the best in the Nation.

I'm not an Olympic athlete like you, but I enjoy working out and staying in shape. I do long distance walking with some sprinting, but I am not a distance runner. So on April 21, 2012, just two months ago, I was running fast down a trail in the hills. I took a giant leap coming down hard on my right leg, breaking my tibia and fibula! The surgery went well, so 2 months later, I'm walking again! Another 4 or 5 months before I get back to walking the distance I did before."

When I say I was walking again at 2 months, that just means I no longer was using a walker, crutch or cane, not doing a whole lot of walking!     In recovery, I push myself physically.  I don't like to be sick or injured ... but then does anyone?   Believe me ... there are mornings when I wake up aching from my past injuries.  Even this morning.  I'm not looking forward to getting older ... so I'll just keep on trucking through it all!

Ugggh, disgusting.  Eagles FB Leonard Weaver had a pretty tragic injury which severed not only his ACL, but his nerves affecting his foot motion.  It became not just a career ending but possibly an ability to walk ending injury.

Honestly, it is THAT bad.  It isnt' for the squemish.  I heard there are screen grabs on Google images where (look away) the shin bone is sticking out.

I damn near tossed my cookies when I first saw it, which was in 60 inches of hi def and not from the web. My wife walked in just as the replays were being shown and she had to leave the room....it was that bad.

They're talking a year of rehab after the surgery and I hope the kid can make a complete recovery...time will tell.

Never showed any effects of the break.

But I did cringe every time he broke a long run and got caught from behind. I always half-expected that leg to go again.

Back when I was in high school, torn knee cartilage meant a foot-long zipper scar and six months in a full-length leg cast. Now it's an inch-long scar and sometimes as little as a few weeks of rest.
