I add then the MM rules of no nudity and work within the small space I have for an avatar (i.e. full body pics don't show my face so I prefer headshots, etc)... Then I choose my avatar within those parameters. I do not know many photographers who would present to a client a picture of themselves unless they 1. were looking to sell their ability to shoot the displayed gender (i.e. male photographer looking to shoot male models, female photographer looking to shoot female models) and 2. have such an awesome, memorable image that it no longer matters that it's a self-portrait. This is an industry networking site... do you have a firm grasp on what networking means? This post was completely irrelevant to the topic or the question the OP asked. What does friends and tags have anything to do with avatar and what he asked this is bordering unsolicited critique.

Did my eyes go crossed? OP asked if he should have photo of himself as his avatar. The first response was (paraphrased), "You have no friends - eff off." This response is obviously not even related to his question, nor was there any advice. Following the rude comment, everyone gave good reasons for him to consider. Then, I read OP's post targeted at the first response of "You have no friends." Proceeding his lash back at Cpt. Rude, he thanked everyone, and to some in a snarky manner. I read it is a quirk, or a remnant from "no friends" comment. Suddenly, Stefano and a bunch of others took offense? Huh?

I just didn't see an attitude in what he was saying personally, and I read this whole thread twice now.

Put your mug shot on your profile. Don't be shy. Models have always told me they like to put a face to the photographer & it helps them recognise you if meeting for the first time. Some have even based their desire to pose nude on the fact that I look friendly & fun, not creepy. So yeah always show your face, don't be creepy & hide behind an avatar.

You've already said its your best work which is what an avatar is for on MM. There are people that do great self portraits.

i think it's great when a photographer has a photo of him or her self in their portfolio, but i hate when it's shot by another photographer. self shot is the way to go! that way you show what you look like, while still only showing your work in the port! win win!

I definitely think a photographer's avatar should be a shot they took. It's cool when photographers have a little picture on their website in their about me or contact section but it's not even really necessary.
