If I like a photographer's work I'll write them a nice tag if they're far away and if they're with in traveling distance I'll send them a message asking if they want to shoot.

I don't usually unless I really like their work and have the time to do a tf shoot, otherwise I just assume it would be "wrong" for me to contact a photographer because I charge for my time, and somehow contacting them suggests I'm not going to charge for it?

I forget where I decided that or saw a photographer say that they assume this, but it sounds right sort of

I wouldn't expect a photographer to contact me for a shoot and then tell me his rates, so it seems like good manners i guess big_smile

I think I've had only about one photographer offer first. All of the others I have to find out and contact first... And re-contact if necessary wink

If you're ever in virginia (or willing to travel) I'd be up for working with you, you have a great look and, equally important on model mayhem, seem genuinely interested in modeling.

I normally let the photographer approach me first if they wish to shoot with me. I'll drop a comment on a photographer's picture and say I like their art, but it's super rare for me to go up to a photographer and say I'm interested in shooting with them. Blame it on my introversion tendencies.

Eighty percent of the time, I contact them. Contacting doesn't ensure an answer though. Occasionally a photographer messages me.

I check my inbox daily. Sometimes there's a shoot offer there; when it sounds good, I reply and blissfully accept. Lately it has been slow, so I have been contacting a lot of photographers. I am bored, got new hair, it's spring out there, I wanna shoot! big_smile

I love getting messaged by an interested party, but scavaging for interesting talent nearby also works well for me, as I can contact exactly those who can benefit my port the best. wink

I myself have been wondering an appropriate and polite way to do this because I move around a lot and not everyone checks out travel notices! Is it advisable to say something like:

"Hello so-and-so,
I am a traveling model seeking paid assignments and I just wanted to notify you that I will be in your area from (x) - (x). Please get in touch if you have any projects coming up that you think I would be suited for. Thank you for your time and consideration!"

Or is that bad?

I have been contacted  few times only a small # had been nice & open on their hourly fee. The rest of them had Queens attitude kind of rude. Agues they think they do me favor to shoot with.
That's one of the reasons I do not contact even if want to. It has been extremely exceptions who I shot with. Please don't take me wrong a traveling model it deserves to get paid . No doubt.
Great attitude is a must...in my cases has been totally tacky.

The writing part is fine but most fail in communication. That's from my experiance  and I'm truly easy guy.

Actually this is my first time I open up on this issue. I never gossip w models neither w photographers on that. Everyone I shoot they know to have good time and decent results. That's  all matters:)

I don't usually contact photographers. I'm a shy person naturally, so I guess I find it a bit challenging. But I do once in awhile, and usually get a response. There are a good number of photographers I've worked with several times though, and they usually approach me when they want to shoot again.

They should not complain unless their profiles says they are not doing test/trades etc. at this time.  Then it could be considered bait and switch maybe, but more likely someone would complain because you didn't read their profile notes.

So it's really not bad, there are a lot worse.  I get models sending me request to shoot for at such and such rate that I have no idea who they are or why they are contacting me.

So many traveling models contact me and ask if I have any projects.  I'm not stupid - I know what they mean and I don't get butt hurt like so many photographers in these forums.

I sometimes have models contact me about shooting, here, on Fetlife, of Facebook, etc, but most of the time I'm the one making initial contact.

Sometimes you get the girl that'll send you a note saying "I love your work" because she's hoping you'll offer to shoot her. A couple of times lately I've made a game of just idly messaging the model and seeing how many messages back and forth it takes for her to muster up the courage to just ask for what she wants. I'm not a mind reader.

When contacting photographers first for traveling work, is it best to leave a message or tag?

If you're working for pay, you should actually read their profile to see if they ever pay models.  I get tons of obnoxious offers for paid work even though I say I only work on a trade basis.  The offenders get blocked immediately.

Otherwise, probably a message works best - not everybody pays a great deal of attention to tags.

I'm flattered and pleased when a model contacts me.  The problem is that I'm virtually retired from photography but still working full-time on my day job, so it's difficult to match schedules.  It does, though, work occasionally!  But my message to the shy models is that if you want to work with someone, go ahead and make the contact; nothing really to lose.

Unless I annoy contact the model not too many models contact me.
I guess this happens to most photographers.

Models, don't be shy.
If you don't contact someone, you already have a "NO".
If you do contact someone, you might get a "YES".

Its pretty much perfect. It's polite, gets the message out, its clear you are seeking paid work and there is no off putting false flattery.

I prefer messages, since I get a notification email on my phone with the content of the message, tags require me to log in and I often forget to look at them later.

I'm pretty apprehensive to contact photographers because I assume many don't want to work TFP and I don't want to offend them. So I wait! x)
