I need new inspiration. How do you find yours? What gets your creative mind going? Feel free to add links to models, photographers, books, movies, music, dances, fashion, makeup, so on and so forth and etc... smile

Just watching my model this is what I got.....,

she needs a bit of a warm up but before I know it she's just moving like molassis from one beautiful pose to another.. like sea weed in the tides....

sort of a dance n she is in a trance n we just jive on the same page with very little talking... as I move around n around.. all I have to do is tell her to STAY n modify the pose to be what WE are looking for...

I find the light she finds the moves.. from finger to toe we are both wathcing n having a ball!

you just have to find your zone n know what you want from that shoot.. but it has to discussed with the photographer so both of you are on the same page. Communication is key.

OP: Simple, I get inspired by adventures. When I need new inspiration, I often will simply plan on exploring somewhere that I have never been before, or I will set up meetings to work with individuals that I have never collaborated with before. Sometimes the simple things that we go through in our lives can often be over looked as inspiration as well. What we perceive as the ordinary, someone else might be able to interpret and help us create as extraordinary. good luck

Inspiration comes in many forms with me, from looking at classic art photography to new stuff or just geeking out on some old camera porn.
But mainly (and I go through a lot of slumps, the latest is still going but getting better) inspiration is a state of mind.
I have found I have to be mentally, emotionally, creatively and ready to open up positively to new input that gets the gears going in my head and heart.

... a spot i'm in now as I have my first set of model photo sessions this weekend in almost two years, all with alternative camera mediums to make it fun and interesting.

I hope that helps  wink

I haven't wanted to make images for a few years now. I thought coming back here might shake me out of it but not so far.

Instead I work on writing songs. I always have paper and pen handy.

I read a couple of anthologies of short stories recently. One was all children's literature from around the world, the other was selected stories for a college course on fiction.

Both books gave me all sorts of cool ideas. I am still sorting some of them out but others have already borne fruit.

I've read some Kafka but never Metamorphosis, that one lingers with strangeness. It changed me somehow.

A good buzz!

A model's face or look usually inspires ideas for me because I like portraits and paintings of people's faces. I don't know why but faces are interesting.

Inspiration during a shoot is simple for me.
Coming up with something novel to actually plan a shoot to is where I get stuck.

I was hoping to see what people do to help themselves come up with brand new ideas.

First, don't try to come up with a new idea. There's no difference in the process for that from the process for an old idea, except you'll be squashing every idea you come up with as already being done. Better to let the idea evolve.

No one ever bats 1,000, so sometimes flipping it around with the goal of failing works. Try to come up with 10-20 bad ideas. When you fail, it means you've come up with a good one.

From there, don't try to come up with "concept" or a look or a pose. Try to come up with a feeling and think of different ways to portray it. Take happy - how can you portray it without relying on a facial expression? What's the feeling of the first day of spring? Search your timeline for someone who's written "that feeling when…." and don't portray the moment, just the feeling. "That feeling when you fall flat on your face…" shoot your face pressed up against a piece of glass. Shoot a head shot where your face is scraped up. Shoot the feeling of humiliation. List lots of different ways to portray it.

Sometimes you get a whole list and one pops out or, you get a whole list and the decide to shoot a different feeling. Coming up with the idea is a process, not a one time event. Expect to revise the idea. Maybe shoot the idea with different people to see how different people influence the result - or even misinterpret it and shoot something totally different - voila, new idea!

Oh gosh, I've actually been searching for a decent starter camera that I could maybe trade for or otherwise borrow from a friend for just that idea... smile

I'll have to look up the people you suggested.

If one trains & hones the senses to be able to sense or feel the spirit behind all things ...

Then ALL things shall become undeniably inspiring to any creative endeavor.

p.s. Also ... If one was to spend some serious time drawing, painting & sculpting ... One would find that creative rage come on much stronger that by photography alone.

Ive found in the past 30+ years of studying & teaching, that Photography tends to focus on the quickening effects of the ego much more so than the developmental insights of the spirit. (imho)

A street sign, a passage in a book, a tv commercial, an item in a store, a phrase that comes up in a conversation, a photo on a website, a lyric in a song.  This list is pretty long.  Usually starts with just a flash of some kind of image that pops into my head, nothing really detailed, that evolves over time.  But that usually follows with developing that hint of an idea into something real and that usually takes getting into a certain frame of mind.  Turning those ideas into reality on a budget - now that's the hard part smile

IDiivil, do you occasionally have an image concept, or a pose come to mind during your daily routine? Or maybe at a party or a bar someone will say something and an image pops into your mind. Or maybe just as you're dropping off to sleep.

Keep a list.  Look it over from time to time.

And take a look at this thread:

I had a friend several years ago that kept a very detailed journal of her dreams.  She would wait a few weeks, and then review the journal for intersecting or recurring themes and then use those to inspire her paintings.  She was very good and her artwork very complex.

Having creative friends really helps me. They sometimes spark me with their work and their ideas. Right now I am getting to know a swimming pool designer. Who knows where this might lead!

I do sometimes get inspired in the middle of the night. I keep a pen and pad of paper handy.

I'm inspired every time that I see your avatar!

And currently I'm studying Stefano's art nudes.

I have a mental note to visit the National Portrait Gallery.
