that model would be too easy to build. as a kid, the wwII era battleships took some skill to glue together. tongue

you could basically snap two pieces together to get that sucker done.

There are stealth reasons for the design.

The $7billion warship to rule the waves: US Navy's largest destroyer ever built gets ready to set sail

The Popular Science article sounds like it was written by someone in marketing.

To me these make more sense, appear more useful and seem more cost effective..

You have to wonder how battle damage resistant a plastic and aluminum ship really is.

Looks sort of like   CSS_Virginia

When was the last time the USN commissioned a *pretty* ship? Spruance? Ugly..Tico..ugh..the Burke's are a bit less fugly but I think my point is made - the USN traditionally sails ships that you wouldn't date smile

I am surprised that they named this ship Zumwalt. When Admiral Zumwalt was CNO most of the Navy brass hated him. He put beer machines in barracks and worked hard to reduce racial and sexist bias in the Navy. He allowed hair to be worn longer and allowed beards. His idea for procuring a lot of cheaper ships instead of a few very expensive ships really piss off a lot of other admirals including Admiral Rickover, the father of the Nuclear Navy.

Even older than that...

These destroyers were there a long long time ago, in a battle field far far away...

He also ordered the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War.  Zumwalt's son, was exposed to the defoliant while serving as a Lieutenant JG in Vietnam at the same time.  The younger Zumwalt died of cancer at age 42.  The grandson of Admiral Zumwalt, Elmo Russell Zumwalt 4th, who is 11 years old, suffers from a congenital dysfunction that confuses his physical senses.

In an article published in The New York Times Magazine on Aug. 24, 1986, the younger Mr. Zumwalt said: ''I am a lawyer and I don't think I could prove in court, by the weight of the existing scientific evidence, that Agent Orange is the cause of all the medical problems - nervous disorders, cancer and skin problems - reported by Vietnam veterans, or of their children's severe birth defects. But I am convinced that it is."

''I realize that what I am saying may imply that my father is responsible for my illness and Russell's disability,'' he continued. ''I have the greatest love and admiration for Dad as a man, and the deepest respect for him as a military leader."
